41. "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling,
and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by
satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
Mainstream science, such as physics, chemistry, astronomy and biology and so on, undoubtedly satisfies the human needs, produced by some relevant human natures, to great extent in the science-oriented society. However, the tremendous greedy appetite for probing the unknown from human beings makes the science somewhat unqualified. The nonmaintream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal indeed serve as the indispensable supplements of mainstream science, and play a vital role in society.
Admittedly, the mainstream science serves as an essential role in the science-oriented world by satisfying human needs. When human being confronted the lightning at first time, we feel scared and also curious for the mysterious phenomenon. But now, the electricity in the physical field dispels this kind of scare and curiousness, and leads to the reassurance to the human being. Similarly, when we enjoy the beauty of the afterglow, we would ask ourselves why the beauty is so short and the coming darkness drives it away. The astronomy and meteorology serves by satisfying this need. So many this kind of examples serves to support this statement-the mainstream have satisfied the needs of human being to great extent.

However, the complex nature and mysterious universe, and even the human itself makes the mainstream science somewhat bogged, even in world full of the higher-advanced science. We still do not know exactly that, how and where the origin of our planet, where the UFO comes from, whether there are certain creatures in the other planet, how the ancient Egypt built the unimaginable pyramid, why the Mayan civilization disappear just in one night, why the mysterious nature phenomenon in some places of our world often appear in the media? So many questions lies owing to the human needs for probing the unknown. That is why the nonmainstream areas exist, which promise us reassurance and confidence facing all the unknown. Besides, some population in the world cannot accept the enough scientific ideas due to all kinds of factors, such as the lagged education, particular culture (in some tribes, for instance) and religious elements. They can only turn to the nonmainstream areas of inquiry for satisfying the their needs.
Another element to reflect the important significance of nonmaintream areas of inquiry is that it can promote or bring some inspiration to the mainstream science sometimes. One needs look no further than the recorded history of some kinds of mainstream science originating. How the astronomy is created? It is just a branch of astrology in the past. Also, the astrology produced the calendar in the ancient China and Babylon. Even the fortune-telling promise some inspirations to the psychology, since some psychologist advise one's pursuit for certain career and forecast his future from his character.
In conclusion, although the mainstream science is very advanced, and also contributing to the human needs a lot, the infinite unknown and the restriction in the conditions, which are essential for the mainstream science, calls for the nonmainstream areas of inquiry in some sense. Moreover, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry often help the mainstream science to some extent. Maybe, you would argue that the nonmainstream areas might result in some destroy and block to the society, but I cannot reject it, just as I cannot reject the mainstream science though the mainstream science has resulted in some deadly and horrible weapons. |
