Argument111
------题目------
The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock, Inc.
'A recent study of Dura-Sock wearers suggests that our company is wasting the money it spends on its patented 'Endure' manufacturing process, which ensures that our socks are strong enough to last for two years. Dura-Sock has always advertised its use of the 'Endure' process, but the new study shows that the average Dura-Sock customer actually purchases new Dura-Socks every three months. Furthermore, Dura-Sock customers surveyed in our largest market, northeastern United States cities, say that they most value Dura-Sock's stylish appearance and availability in many colors. These findings suggest that Dura-Sock can increase its profits by discontinuing its use of the 'Endure' manufacturing process.'
------正文------
Before addressing program to discontinue their promotion on the patented 'Endure' manufacturing process, the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock Inc. need to reexamine the two studies further. In fact, both of the two studies and the reasoning based from them are questionable at best.
To begin with, the argument reveals that the first study of Dura-Sock wearers was conducted recently. But, how ‘recent’ was the study conducted? If the study was conducted five or six months ago, then in this era of rapid developing market leading to transient information, the result might not apply to the contemporary market. Furthermore, we are not informed any information about the study which showing the wearers purchases new Dura-Socks every three months. Those information may include the amounts of the participants, their age, gender and background, any of which may influence the reliability of the result the study relies. Moreover, purchasing new Dura-Socks every three months does not necessarily mean lost the older socks every months. In turn It is likely that due to the enduring quality of Dura-Socks, customers are incline to buy Dura-Sock in such a high frequency!
In addition, the second survey conducted in the largest market is also open to doubt. Still, just as the first study goes, we are not informed any information about the survey aside from the side the survey conducted. Thus, we have enough confidence to question the reliability and representative of this survey. Perhaps the majority of these participants are young ladies who especially appeal to the appearance and colors. Then, the result cannot apply to the general people. Yes, the survey was conducted in the larges market, northeastern United Stated cities. Yet, what about the other markets in the very region? What about markets in the other area of the United States? What about markets in the foreign contraries aside from USA? The arguer refers to nothing.
Finally, the arguer fails to consider other circumstances which may influence the profits of Dura-Sock Inc. by discontinuing the 'Endure' manufacturing process. First, the discontinuation of "Endure" may attribute to the loss of myriads of customers which are previously loyal to the 'Endure' products. Second, the president fails to consider the contemporary competition of market. Perhaps there existed many sock companies which were keeping improving their products' appearances and colors to make up with the disadvantage of losing gaining the patent of 'Endure'. Third, the abeyance of the 'Endure' manufacturing process might squander the inherent merits of advertises which campaigned for ‘Endure’ long time. While the price for the new manufacturing process and the price for the new advertise might not necessarily suffice to the loss in terms of discontinuation for 'Endure'.
To conclude, the argument is unwarranted as it stands. Failing to account and rule out all those scenarios discussed above, the president misestimate the marketing situation and might address a program which may decrease the profit in the long run. |
