All students should be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science.
------正文------
o all students need to take courses in science, no matter they are major in nature science or other fields, and no matter they have interests in science or not ? In my point of view, every student does need to take science courses, but the syllabus for them should alter in term of different students with different majors.
To begin with, the merits of science to other fields such as humanities and social science are obvious. The methodologies used in nature science are also useful in social science and humanities and could help the academic improvements in these two fields. Statistical analysis, for example, which is widely used in psychology and advertising policy springs from the basis subject ----mathematics. Another compelling example is that archaeologists usually use petrologic method to make assessment on their own discoveries. Moreover, the achievements of nature science, especially technological breakthrough often serve well in humanities and social sciences. Nowadays, more and more artists use computer to assist their creative activities and technical devices have been greatly improved the effectiveness of the treatment related to any psychological fields. In this sense, we could hardly deny the positive influence of nature science on the fields of humanities and social science, and people would learn science would benefit his or her own study greatly.
Moreover, the knowledge of science not only benefits students' academic performance, but also contribute to their future careers. In contemporary society, employers place more and more emphasis on the comprehensive knowledge background and those graduates with general knowledge about various fields would definitely gain a advantageous position in job market. Moreover, those who have the sense of humanity to serve the large public and simultaneously possess the knowledge of using technical appliance to serve their objectives are just those who are in real need in any country in the world. Furthermore, the possession of knowledge of science could prevent graduates from lagging behind and ensure them have the basic knowledge about the natural world around us, which could help them better communicate in the society. Imagine, it would turn out to be greatly surprising and rather strange to talk with person who takes for granted that the earth is the center of the universe. Thus, for every student who considers enter the society sooner or latter, course in science should not be neglected.
In addition, the syllabus of science course should be categorized in term of different students with different majors. Those who are major in economics and finance obviously need a profound knowledge in mathematics and other related subjects such as statistical analysis. These courses are the foundation of their studies and future researches. However, turning to physics and chemistry, maybe these students just need the comprehensive and rather simple knowledge which could ensure that their daily life would not be confused by lacking basic knowledge about the mundane world. Similarly, students majoring in humanities, such as arts and literature, should also give their own requirements about learning sciences that suit them best.
To sum up, the courses in science are obviously useful for all students and graduates no matter what fields they major in. However, considering the different levels of need of knowledge about science, the standard of learning science should be made respectively to suit different students. |
