It is widely agreed that artists create works and critics comment works. Based on this sense, I strongly agree what the speaker stated: lasting value of works is given by artists rather than critics.

Undoubtedly, the various kinds of works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, are created by artists. The different kind of works reflects the artists' mental attitudes, such as believes, desires, intentions, as well as some social characteristics, such as the life of the public, etc. Works of arts are based on artists' hard work, and vise versa. Take painters for example, in order to work out a good work, they sometimes have to experience life in wild field for several months, even several years. For some writers, they have to go out to search for valuable materials, based on which the work becomes more convincing and impressive. From the examples we can learn that without artists' arduous work, there is no any work, consequently, no lasting value of works. In a word, there is artists’ hard work, and then there are works of art with lasting value.

Moreover, there is no standard to judge how valuable a work is, and the process of people's judging a work's lasting value often lasts a very long time, which is a way full of disputations. Nevertheless, the lasting value of works is based on the value of the works themselves, rather than comments from critics. Take the Van Gogh’s works for an example, after his death, the value of his works was gradually realized by the pubic. When he is alive, most critics hardly criticized his works. We can find that the lasting value of a work is fundamentally based on the real value of the work itself, although it is impossible to read the real value of the work. During the process from a work's birth to the understanding of its real value by the public, critics made nearly no contribution to the work. The real value of a work is judged by the public, not the critics.

Last but not least, although critics help, in some extent, people to appreciate, to recognize as well as to judge the lasting value of a work, their comments, often are biased and incomplete, suffer from some vital weaknesses. In the first place, it is hard for the critics to well know the works. Each work of art is done in a special environment, which consists of time, place, political environments, etc. It's impossible for the critics to be clearly aware of the background of each work. In the second place, every critic has limited knowledge, envision, they can't give really right comments toward a specific work. In addition, critics' comments are often influenced by their personal inclination, government’s pressure, catering for the public, so they also can give fair comments to a work.

To sum up, although the critics help human beings to realize the works of art, but the lasting value of every work is given by artists themselves. The lasting value of a work is an inherent characteristic of the work, which will gradually realized by the public, and also bring the public the visual, aural as well as mental enjoy.
