218. "In order for any work of art— whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people."

There is always a debate among people on how to judge good works, should it be understandable to majority. I maintain that admitting the internal requirement of harmony in all works, circumstances exists in which people are not able to understand some of the great works due to the limitation of time, education, and politics factors.

Accomplished creations respected by majority often follows specific aesthetic principles, which are capable of arouse the feeling of harmony and balance. Paintings of Monet, leader of a group of French artists called the “Impressionist,” which included such painters as Renoir and Pissarro, explores the effects of light on outdoor scenes, and let his initial impressions stand as complete works. Through his works called “Impression: Sunrise”, people are able to taste the feelings of morning glory and a sort of internal balance. Wolfgang Mozart, who is considered as one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time and authorizing over 600 works all his life, had composed numerous wonderful pieces, which can bring people harmony. Indeed there is something that inside all of the ‘good art’, though most people are not able to realize its existence when appreciating these great works. From this stand point, in order for most work of art----whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song----to have merit it must be understandable to most people.

However, though can be understood by majority, especially young people, some works, for example, a considerable number of popular events, are of no artistic value. These creations are understandable because they are relatively direct in exhibiting emotions, for instance, with the assistance of lyrics. Yet the content of many of them are too superficial to ponder.

Circumstances also exist in which several accomplished works are not fully comprehended by earthlings. For one thing, those intelligent artists are always far from what ordinary people can image due to their sound apprehension of objects, surroundings and truth of life. For supporting examples one needs no further to look at Vincent Van Gogh, a distinguished painter who is believed capable of express his emotion and inclination with brushworks and extremely vivid color, had sold out only one of his works all his life, an the purchaser was his brother Theo. Audience are usually not able to comprehend the grotesque style of his oils paintings and inquire about the intense contrast of colors. Only after his death did people realize the importance of his expressions. History has seen that people’s opinions varies from individual to individual even today on such great works, however, this can never disprove their values though they are not understand by majority, either in former time or nowadays.

To summarize, good artistic works have their similarities in harmony and balance, In order to understand the merits of arts, one has to think independently.
