The following is a letter to the editor of a news magazine.
'Clearly, the successful use of robots on missions to explore outer space in the past 20 years demonstrates that robots could be increasingly used to perform factory work more effectively, efficiently, and profitably than human factory workers. The use of robots in factories would offer several advantages. First, robots never get sick, so absenteeism would be reduced. Second, robots do not make mistakes, so factories would increase their output. Finally, the use of robots would also improve the morale of factory workers, since factory work can be so boring that many workers would be glad to shift to more interesting kinds of tasks.'

Inspired by the successful use of robots for exploring outer space in the past years, the editor of a new magazine recommend that robots could be successfully used to perform factory work by citing several merits the replacement from workers to robots. However, the editor should consider the difference between in outer space and in factory. And he/she should reexamine those merits from several other angles.
To begin with, whether those robots are easily available is the first thing any executives of factories should consider. It is mentioned that the successful robots are those exploring outer space, which is of course paid myriads of resource including money, human power, etc to design, maintain, considering the mission are especially sophisticatedly. Thus, it is understandable that those robots are successful. As to factory, different factory have distinctive demand to the design of robots, therefore improve the price of them, which might not be affordable by the factories. Besides, query possibility whether there are companies or institutions are willing to help design.
In addition, at first glance the robots never get sick, so the absenteeism would be reduced. Nevertheless, the general working of robots are limited by several aspects. They should be fueled by battery or electricity. So when the battery or electricity are in short supply, they don't work at all. Furthermore, they will also make 'mistakes' as workers. For example, due to mechanic flaws, robots may cease to function or function not conforming the design. Those 'mistakes' can be detrimental to the factory. Moreover, robots are not flexible as human beings. They perform routine actions as computer program has designed. When facing urgent problems they cannot response immediately as a worker. In short, robots, as machines in nature, may yield more 'absenteeism' than a common worker.
The last but not least, the author unfairly assume that those robots would receive applaud by workers so as to improve the moral of factory workers. First, the supersession of men/women by robots even makes workers feel far more boring than before. While in the old days workers can say some words during working time or have a chat after work, now many workers have to face the manlike machines all day long. Furthermore, the replacement of human beings with robots might decrease the moral of factory workers. Many workers might lose their jobs because their former works are done by robots, while the rest of those luck workers might in a nervous situation for unexpected opportunities of unemployment. That will decrease their morale at best.
In conclusion, before addressing the conclusion to the mass of the public, the editor of the magazine should consider further questions. In fact, the successful experience of robots in outer space cannot apply to the industry unselectedly; the robots might also 'sick' as common workers, and even worse; the mechanization of factory might decrease the morale of workers and in turn decrease the output. |
