137  What we call a progress is the matter of changing one problem to another.

In this statement we can detect a sense of pessimistic that the author denies true progress by asserting that it is just changing from one problem to another. It may be true that some problems involving everyday lives can not be diminished totally. Yet I can not agree to reduce most inspiring human progress to simply transforming between problems.

Admittedly, the society saw many long lasting issues such as poverty and war prevail the history, and try to elevate only by transforms them to something else. Though technological revolution greatly advanced the productivity and helped to accumulate myriad of societal wealth, improvements for the poor is just merely little welfare provided for them to live on. Part of the financial bounder placed on them is simply transformed into social responsibility, for example, augment of tax imposed. Take violence and war for another instance, the competing instinct is so deeply rooted in human nature that no real solution can meliorate conflict among individuals, groups as well as nations. Even after World War two the earth enjoyed unprecedented peace, hostility between countries exist in other forms. The cold war and regional conflicts in middle Asian sever as adequate examples as offspring of worldwide wars.

Further more, in some cases we can just try to solve one problem by reducing it into a less-noxious version, given the limited technology and scientific advancement. Consider, for example, the global hunger for energy. Our precedents are aware of the shortness of coal storage and available woods, therefore natural gases and petroleum are explored and utilized as alternatives. However these depleting energy resources urge human-beings to find another solution. For centuries the world witnessed people dealt with this problem from burning coals to burning oils, and perhaps expecting more changes for energy resources in future. Though some countries are taking aggressive measure to utilize solar energy, other deficiency may arise along with this progress, making people move to next alternative.

When it seems that problems prevails and resist to be eliminated, we should not neglect advancements actually exist and are not simply moving from one version to another. In the field of medical treatment, vast evidences can be readily drawn to justify my view. Early in the 20th century, doctors succeed in eliminating smallpox and had it permanently prevented. Thousand of lives are therefore free from pain and desperate panic exerted by the vital virus. Should we celebrate this brilliant progress in history or just regard it as merely revising a threat to a better situation? Clearly the latter idea is too pessimistic and ridicules.

To conclude, when evaluating the speaker’s assertion, thorough agreement or total objection is both hasty. Since the concept “progress” is a profound and complicated crux. Circumstances and extends involved vary greatly in different cases. While we call the invention and application of computer a progress, a person successfully abandoning drugs can also be considered as progress. Thus case-to-case analysis is demanded before deciding whether we are really advancing or just moving from a problem to another.

我是25号,还有一周了,可是现在写还是经常超时,思路也不清楚,最要命的是语言很差!
