When the results of final examination of a semester come out, every student pay great attention to what scores they have achieved, since these would serve as indicator of their endeavor and progress. It seems that only through the use of logic and precise measurement can we get to know our achievement, just like the statement above. However, there are other methods and tools through which we can locate our position in the way to better future. What's more, these tools, together with those logic and precise ones, should be combined to measure our performance.

There's no doubt that logic and precise, careful measurement do can and are being widely used in the process to measure our progress. They compare what we achieve today with that of yesterday, and then give us a direct show of whether we have advanced or retreated. For example, a improvement in score where an A in the mathematics gained by a student from the past C will clearly indicate that this student is doing better than past. Moreover, many aspects of our society's progress are weighed by those precise measurements, for example a increment in a nation's GDP would likely to show that the country's economy is under a smooth uplift. In a word, without such logic and precise measurement, we may even not able to know where we are in the way of success, let alone being aware of whether we have advanced.

However, many times those careful measurement can only show the picture of one aspect of a matter, leaving the rest of the landscape out of our attention. Simply ignoring other aspects of a matter that are not shown by the precise measurement would undermine what has been shown. Take the GDP of a nation again as an example. While an annual increment of nearly 9 percents can be regarded as a great progress in the nation's economy, what about questions relating to this such as how the increase in the measurement is achieved? If in order to gain and keep such progress, a great amount of energy, such as coal and natural gas, is consumed, it is reasonable to weigh this cost against what is gained in the outcome of a computation. Further more, if the consumption of energy leads to the omission of greenhouse gases and the pouring of many other pollutants in to the river, can we still feel safely that we are really advancing? For instance, the progress of our mind and psycology can be measured by people's sayings and their behaviors. While a boy would likely to complain about his mother's not giving access of watching television for more than 2 hours a day to him, words relating to some social questions such as there is about 80 percents of the population in the country living under the basic living requirements, while the rest 20 percents has grasped more than 90 percents of the nation's wealth are coming out from the same boy when growing mature. While a young child may interested in the action of theft and even try to imitate, the same guy will well know that this is an illegal action and even fight fiercely against such crimes when he grows up. Such improvement cannot be measured by those precise measurements, since they cannot reflect the progress in an individual's mind. Further more, when the progress gained in the every component of the society, a great overall advancement in the society can be expected, which is still impossible for those careful measurements to properly evaluate. What does an individual say and how he is acting would be a reasonable measurement to indicate his progress, and the same holds true when applying to the society made up by such individuals.

In sum, while through the use of logic and of precise, careful measurement can we become aware of our progress, other measurements are well developed and widely applied. In order to have a clear view of how far we have advanced or retreated, those two kinds tools should be used in combination while each of which is properly used. When those precise ones showing half of the picture, other measurements such as expressions and behaviors show the other half, and finally we will feel happy when we noticed that we are stepping forward an inch everyday.
