36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

Can the greatness of individuals only be decided by those who live after them? While the author argues so, I can't agree with this opinion. In my view, since this question is depend on different individuals and their activities, it is impossible to arrive at a conclusion that is applied to all human beings.

To begin with, in some fields such as science, which may require many years to determine the value of one's work, it does need people who live after these individuals to judge whether or not one person is great. A proper case would serve to give us a good understanding of this. In the field of physics, the Polish astronomer Copernicus  advanced the theory which says the Earth is not the center of the cosmos, and different planets travel around the sun. This theory, though appreciated highly by people nowadays, was in contrast with the belief of people living at that time and was believed to be heterodoxy. Today, what seems an unreasonable theory has proved to be right and the person who was once despised is now highly regarded. This may help us to find the reason why we need the people living after them to make the evaluation - it is highly possible that the outstanding talents and transcendental intelligence of some individuals surpass the cognition of the public and their peers or maybe one’s theory needs the test of time to be proved correct. In this sense, sometimes the best way to make an objective evaluation of one's greatness may be to leave it to the people who live after them.

However, in some other cases, it is highly possible that the contemporaries may also have the ability to decide the greatness of individuals. The reason I make this argument is based on the fact that some basic standard(criterion) for judging a person in different period of history may be similar such as to be honest, to be merciful, altruism and some other moral standards alike. Mother Teresa, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, receives worldwide respect for what she had done to the needy. While on the other hand, Hitler, the leader of Nazism was given the notorious reputation when he was still alive and different people, no matter in the past or present, or even those hundreds of thousands of years after us would despise him. Since we have the ability to evaluate these people,I think we are to do this in order not to give them what they deserves.

In sum, taking into account all that I stated above, we can safely come to the conclusion that different situations may lead to different answers to the topic. If it is the responsibility of our descendents to make the decision of one's greatness, we who live in the same time have no reason to make any arbitrary judgment. On the other side, if we can decide it at our time why should we leave it to those who live after us?

是不是观点不够鲜明?
