------题目------
The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
'Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months.'
------正文------
In this argument, the arguer draws a conclusion that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months. To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer cites a results that the plays prefer games which provides lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to -date computers. In addition, the arguer points out that the company had just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign. However, close scrutiny of this evidence reveals it fraught with vague, oversimplified and unwarranted claims in several aspects.

To begin with, the validity of the survey is doubtful. Lacking information of the number surveyed, we doubt that whether the respondents constitute the overall population who like the computer games. It is entirely possible that those who respond to the survey are just those ones who like the lifelike graphics in the games. Moreover, whether all those persons who like this kind of computer game would really buy them is unknown. We all know that this game should under the support of the up-to -date computer which is not a cheap one. Whether all of them can afford this cost is open to doubt. Either scenario, if true, would weaker the arguer’s claims rather than support it.

Furthermore, even if the survey id directed by authorities in scientific way, the arguer still falsely depends on gratuitous assumption that the extensive advertising campaign directed to the people 10 to 25 years old would surely be successful. In fact, we find any sign in this argument that these teenagers are the main consumer of this game; maybe the adults may hold the most percentage of the consumers. In this case, the company would lose many opportunities to attract the attention of the customers. Moreover, it is open to doubt that they have so much money to support up-to -date computer. These ones during 10to 25 are mostly students, thus, they have any economic capacity to support themselves, not to mention the advanced computer. The arguer must address these possibilities and rule them out before we can accept the conclusion .

Last but not least, the arguer hastily generalizes that the sales would increase dramatically in the next few months. Granted that what we doubt in the above two paragraphs are true, the arbitrary conclusion is still unconvincing. The company overlooks other competitors who may also produce the same kind of games. It is entirely that the supply of this game in the market had already meet the demand of the customers. Another possibility is that the game produced in this company is on the inferior position compared by other ones, although they are the both computer games. For example, the stories contained in the game are out of date, or not interesting. Therefore, the arguer must provide more evidence or conduct a deeper investigation to ensure that Whirlwind video games are superior ones.
To sum up, the argument is neither logical r persuasive. To better bolster and strengthen this argument, the arguer needs to guarantee us that the teenagers are exactly the main consumer group to this computer games, and the customers are more interested in the games produced by this company. Also this production would take a large share in the market. Only with more convincing evidence could this argument become more than just a emotional appeal.
