When we refer to history, we can see that mistakes play an important role in both advancement of society and science. Thus some people tend to think that only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress. In my point of view, however, I consider the assertion too arbitrary since mistake is not the only prerequisite that lead to discovery or progress.

Admittedly, mistake serves as an efficient catalyst to the final achievement. The famous saying "Failure is the mother of success" can be treated as a powerful corroboration to this point. Through mistakes, people could undoubtedly gain a broad perspective of their whole work and find some vital flaws that would otherwise be hidden deeply beneath the fact. Therefore, mistakes beneficial people a lot in the process of exploring the outer unknown world, impel people to seek after truth efficiently and effectively. From the perspective of history, we could see many breakthroughs in science could be greatly attributed to some necessary mistakes before. For instance, light, an indispensable instrument both in our work and lives, has gone through countless mistakes before its final success by the famous inventor Edison. Through these mistakes he derived so many useful experience and information that helped him a lot in finding a suitable and durable material for filament. Things like these are innumerable in history, which ultimately illuminate that mistakes is an indispensable factor which contribute to success such as discovery and so forth.

However, it is not to say that mistake is the only approach to discovery and progress since there are also other ways to achieve success without doubt. The very knowledge and experience from our ancestors are of great help to the activities of exploring the unknown because with the guidance of these things we could easily and efficiently find our way to success. And furthermore, these knowledge and experience would serve as extremely good paradigms so as to make people to get a clear mind of things and avoid the similar mistakes from happening again. In other words, sufficient knowledge and experience come down from the ancestors could successfully pave the way for us to success.

In addition, without necessary skills such as reasoning and logic and what is more, thorough plans, mistakes mean nothing but mess. Mistakes are precious to success since useful information lies in these mistakes to help people better solve problems and point out the corresponding way to success. Nevertheless, without necessary abilities of reasoning to summarize experience and lessons from mistakes, people could learn nothing that are helpful to their work. In this sense, mistakes only contribute to big loss and undoubtedly would finally lead to failure instead of success.
What is more, careful plan is also beneficial in that with the help of a thorough plan considering every possible situation, people could handle mistakes with a positive and wise attitude toward them and help people propose further study or research.

To sum up, though mistake play a significant role in discovery or progress, other factors should not be neglected since only the combination of these precious essentials could lead to discovery or progress.
