When we look back into the history, we'll find many examples to substantiate the speaker's contention that through mistakes there can be discovery and progress. However, I am not on the speaker's side that there is no other means lead to finding and development.

Let us examine our learning progress through all these years. While learning knowledge and skills of scientific areas, we're first implanted with established formulas, ideas and concepts. Scientists also make mistakes, and every mistake helps them rule out a wrong possibility which may later guide them into a wrong way, if not treated properly. The only right way leads to real fact is picked out by eliminating other wrong paths. It is well-known that Edison conducted thousands of times of experiments to find out the most suitable filament. Without the previous mistakes and the experiences accumulated by correcting them, how could Edison make the correct choice—selecting one substance out of the enormous matters in the world? In a larger scale, if we bear a historical perspective, we’ll see that mistakes of predecessors helped us a lot to find the correct knowledge. Columbus’s discovery has corrected the mistaken notions of earlier explorers and geographers. However, without the mistakes of former scientists, it will be more difficult for Columbus to discover the new continents.

In a word, making mistakes is unavoidable since the intelligence and knowledge span of a man is limited, but by correcting them we move closer to discoveries and progress, that‘s how we grasp established knowledge and go on discovering the mystery of the world.

Recall the condition when we first learn a foreign language. Everyday we read, listen and spell. Moreover, today the concept of well-rounded people also requires that we have a healthy body. To gain physical progress, we can do pretty well without mistakes. In fact, there are few mistakes. By doing exercises like running, jumping and other sports, we become more physically sound. Whether we do it in a standard way or not, we can achieve the progress we want. Further, later in our successive life, it is important that we do exercise to keep healthy. Jogging, hiking, swimming, skiing or cycling, we can do whatever we want and in whatever way we like. Have you ever heard people say "You make a mistake while jogging, your hands are swinging in a wrong angel thus you’ll make no progress.”?

To sum up, I admit that in scientific world, whether when we possess well-known knowledge and skills, or when scientists make new discoveries, mistakes can serve as a useful means to bring us to success. But still, we should be aware that by correct steady effort, it is possible that we’ll achieve accomplishments. Moreover, under some circumstances, once we make effort, we can pick the fruit, no matter there are mistakes or not, at least for physical progress.
