Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.

It is widely believed that only through mistakes can discover or progress come out, emphasized by many proverbs in most countries in the world. After a close reflection, however, I disagree with this assertion. Although mistakes can help people discover new things and progress, it is not the only way to attain discovery or progress.

To begin with, it is undeniable that we can learn much from mistakes, which tell us our disadvantages and improper means in progress. For supporting example one should look no further than the Edison, who had tried more than one hundred kinds of materials to make bibe, just reply as follows( and I paraphrase): " Just these mistakes tells me more than one hundreds of materials are not suitable to bulb", when asked whether his experiments had value. What he said reveals the worth of mistakes, which give lessons to what we could do in the future. It is the same when mistakes occur in other fields such as art, education, and so forth.

However, the fact that mistakes can benefit discovery or progress indicates nothing about that without mistakes we cannot progress or discover. In many cases, we can make great discovery or progress by chance or right means, or other factors, without making mistakes, as we discouss as follows.

First, chance can be the way to discovery or progress without mistakes, especially in ancient times. History informs us many cases about it; consider how the fire came to use. Anthropologists point out that it is most likely that ancestor in prehistory discovered the singed animals after the natural fire taste good, and begin to learn using fire. Thus, by chance our human history makes a great process. Or consider the discovery of penicillin, and many relic great discovered by travelers passing by. It is  true that by chance without mistakes we can also make discovery and progress.

In addition, after a close and reasonable plan, we can also discover or progress making no mistakes, which are not necessary to every progress. Consider the success of going to the moon problem. Although it is the first time we human strive to attend the beautiful moon in long history, we have accomplished it without mistakes, which can destroy so much that we cannot afford, after a long and careful plan. The case tells us we need not mistakes to attain our goals, and we can accomplished it.

Moreover, if we hold the belief that only though mistakes can there be discovery and progress, it may be counterproductive to our lives and works in many aspects. First, it may render us to do things rashly, daring whether mistakes would be made, and as a result we must take a much longer time to gain our goals. Furthermore, some mistakes have great negative influence that we cannot endure, such as the political mistakes or war tragedy mistakes which destroy many people's lives in long period. For example, every Chinese would not like to acknowledge that only through Cultural Revolution can we progress. Indeed, we cannot progress just basing on mistakes.

In sum, there are many means such as chance and careful plans, by which we can gain discovery or progress; mistakes can only be helpful to our goals in some cases. Furthermore, we should strive to avoid mistakes as possible as we can.
