Issue 31: “Education will be truly effective only when it is specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.”
What an ideal and perfect situation for the education circle and what a great deal of good it will do for each student and therefore for the whole society, if education were specifically designed to meet each student's needs and interests! After all, each person is an individual somewhat different from anyone else, and a student, of course is a person, surely will be so.
Image if what a student real needs (not what one claims to want) and what is his/her interests are found out, which is a job of much difficulty, and a unique program which suits he/she wonderfully is worked out, which is also a hard task, how fortunate the student is and how much benefit he/she will get! A professor of my university once said (and I paraphrase), "Each person in the world is unique. What can be in the best interests for each one is to educate him /her in a correspondingly unique system." And if we could do that, Einsteins, Newtons, Beethovens will come into being one after another. To an individual, there is no other thing more beneficial than being educated beautifully according to one's specific situation; to a country, there is no other thing more glad than seeing her citizen to be fully developed; to the entire human race, there is no other thing more gratified than knowing that each member is doing the best to the whole world. And through the specifically designed system, an individual can be best benefited, a country most glad, the world best gratified.
It is a great thing to educate each student in the way just suit for him/her, but what seems impossible is the costs that must be paid if doing so. A lot of analysts are needed at first to know the student and then to decide that what should be done, which needs considerable time and money. After this, numerous educators are necessary to perform the courses designed by the analyst, which cause so much cost that it is beyond what we can afford. After all, education is not the only thing we should care about. We need to eat, we need to drink, and when we are tired, we need to rest.
The only thing that we can do now is to go as far as possible in the process of educating students according to one's real needs and interests, not do that only. We should pay attention to each student and try our best to educate him/she in the way which fits best under the present condition, and student should not just be educated passively, but think by himself/herself to find out what truly fits him/she and try to form a system in which he/she choose to absorb and learn what are good for his/her own development.
As great as the purpose be, the implement is just too idealistic to put into real practice considering the costs and circumstance. We can, however, teach students the basic skills, such as how to think, how to evaluate, and how to perform, to form his/her own system for being educated most effectively. And, we are on our way. |
