Title: Artificial Intelligence Enabled Low-carbon Transportation

Abstract (max 200 words):

Active travel is a promising way to achieve low-carbon traveling to make modern life more environmentally friendly. However, complex traffic conditions and imperfect infrastructure in urban areas make it problematic to provide a safe and comfortable environment for emerging active transport modes such as shared bikes and e-scooters. Therefore, improving the safety and convenience of active modes of urban transportation has become critical to encouraging people to adopt such travel methods. Fortunately, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology can help us analyse complex and highly dynamic traffic scenarios. With the help of information collected by connected Internet-of-Things sensors, AI can be leveraged to identify effective interventions that promote safe active travel in the presence of driven and driver-less vehicles. In this project, you will develop cutting-edge AI technologies and apply them in the assessment of active travel safety in existing systems, the analysis interrelation between modes of transport, aur quality, and health, and the validation of proposed green and safe travel solutions. The output of this research project will have the opportunity to be published in internationally renowned journals, including but not limited to IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems and IEEE Internet of Things Journal.

Short Bio: Mona Jaber is a Senior Lecturer in IoT with the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London. Her research interests include the intersection of ML and IoT in the context of sustainable development goals and IoT-driven digital twins. She published more than 25 articles in the areas of ML for intelligent wireless communication, sustainable energy, smart mobility, and privacy-preserving e-health in flagship IEEE journals including IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, and IEEE Internet of Things Journal. She established a ground-breaking project that uses optical fibre systems for the detection and classification of active travel that informs smart city and transportation planning. She is the founder and director of the ‘Digital Twins for Sustainable Development Goals’ research lab at QMUL. Mona authored four industrial patents on wireless communication and mobility. She is an executive committee member of the IEEE UK and Ireland Intelligent Transportation Systems chapter, and a Transportation Committee member of the IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative. She serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Machine Learning in Communications and Networking. She was elected secretary of the IEEE UK and Ireland section for 2025-26.
