偶把自己写的issue7也重贴一遍吧。偶的观点和楼主的差不多,有不少例子都很类似的,呵呵。

Issue 7
The speaker asserts that video recording is a more important means of documenting contemporary life than a written record because the former is more accurate and convincing. I concede that video cameras play more and more important role in recording contemporary life, which was usually recorded by written records before. However, I strongly hold that video documentation cannot take place of written records, and that video records serve to supplement written records.
Admittedly, video documentation is more accurate and objective than written records, which may be influenced by the records' authors. Since the advent of video technology, we are used to obtaining information from television, a machine used to spread video records. More and more people, for example, get into the habit of gaining information from TV rather than newspaper. They think video records are more convincing than written records. Besides, no one can be expected to completely and accurately recount such events as a football game, an election, a wedding ceremony and so on.
But do we not need written records? Unfortunately, it seems not be the case. In many fields, written records cannot be taken place by video records. For example, law cannot be described by video documentation, and the historical events before invention of video camera can only recount by written documentation as well. In addition, only by written records, people can express their mood, feelings, and other inner activities.
Besides, compared with written records, video records have some disadvantages, which are hardly to be conquered. First, video records cannot be used to quantitatively describe information. When we do a scientific experiment, we can only use camera to recount the phenomenon, but we cannot use it to documenting the figures concerned with the experiment. Secondly, obtaining a written record is much more convenient than getting a video one. People, with a pen and a piece of paper, can write down what they have seen at anywhere and at anytime. Nevertheless, Not everybody has a video camera, and even they have one, they may not take it wherever they go. Thus, Getting a video record is impossible sometime.
Finally, using video records as a supplement of written records, we can recount contemporary life better than only using either of them. Written records record people's feelings, ideas, thoughts and other subjective things or what video cannot express, while video camera document the environment, process and other objective things, which are adequate to be recorded by video means. In this way, we can record the contemporary life not only accurately and convincingly, but also
thoroughly and deeply.
In sum, the speaker overstates the importance of video records and overlooks the necessity of written records. Even though I concede that video camera plays an important role, written records are still cannot be substituted. To better recording contemporary life, we need both video records and written records. |
