So glad to see so many new messages here, which means so many new friends will come to U.S.

Several small tips to you:
1. Open bank account as soon as possible and deposit all your money into it only leaving necessary small amount of cash with you.

2. Buy insurance as soon as possible. Do not participate in any dangerous activities before you have insurance. Be careful when you pass road, especially during niht.

3. Apply for credit card as soon as possible. It is especially important for those PhD. students who may stay in U.S for several years.

4. Compare several apartments before you sign renting lease. Consider: price, location, furnished or not, facility included in rent or not, rent renewal interval, laundry facility, use gas or electricity in kitchen, etc.

5. Buy textbooks online or buy second books. Resell the textbook after you use them. Only keep those good textbooks with you. Sometimes professors here never use the textbook assigned at the beginning of semester.

1. Health Inspection Certificate
Unless U.S custom changed their requirements, custom officers do not check your Health Inspection Certificate when you enter U.S.

2. Ordering Ticket
Ticket agent is very popular in cities especially big cities. Although there is price difference among different agent quotation, I do not think saving several hundred RMB can be a big issue when you are preparing study abroad. The most important thing is to get the real ticket in time.

3. Arrival date
Generally speaking, arrive U.S one week to ten days before your semester beginning is enough. During this period, you can be customed to U.S time, open bank account, looking for apartment, establish social network, buy living stuff, go around college, buy text book etc.

4. Luggage
My personal recommendation is to buy soft luggage since they are lighter than hard ones and not easy to break unless someone cut it using knife.

5. Roommate
Chinese roommates are easy to communicate with. American roommates can help you improve your English and teach you American culture. Final decision need to made by yourself.

6. Apartment
When you rent apartment, please consider following issues: facility cost included or not, lease renewal period ( a month,half a year, or a year), location and neighbourhood, kitchen use gas or electricity,number of bedrooms, on the ground or not.

7. Transportation
Public transportation is various according to different city. For example, NY has good public transportation including metro, bus and taxi. However, you may need a car in Boston.

8. Pirate CD/VCD/DVD
You can take some with you. However, remember two issues:1. Do not take too many with you. 2. Do not take package with you.
You can also copy all your pirate CD/VCD/DVD into hard disk. If you do it, custom will not check your hard disk since they do not have enough time to to that.

Please post your question unless you cannot find the answers in the digest area.

We all sincerely want to help you.
