Issue48: 406 words 40 minutes
The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.
I fundamentally agree with speaker's assertion that the study of history always focus on the some great individual, on balance, the importance of general people is greatly diluted. I concede that great individual or elite often plays a catalyzer role in impelling the development of society. Yet, the powerhouse and generator of the advancement of we human being society is the general people, and even whose name and identities have long been forgotten by person who live after them, as discussed below.
To begin with, we can not deny that the great individual who the study of history often emphasizes, to some extent catalyze the advancement pace in different field. By virtue of some new ideology or breakthrough, they inject vigor into human being's society, or incite publics to pursue new aim and direction. History is replete with countless such example. One apt illustration involves Watt, which was the one of greatest inventor in the history, and invented the steam engine. In retrospect, his innovation leaded to the Industrial Revolution; rendering people emancipated from onerous work, and greatly enhanced the efficiency of producing as a result. As it turns out, steam engine had broken the ancient social structure, and renewed distribute the source of manpower. Similarly, in considering Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, they was contribution to elevate the Indian and Africa American social status by non-violence and non-cooperation movement. They advocated the equal right under the laws. Therefore, countless people incited their political line pursue the ideal political ideology.
Yet, one reason why I essentially agree with speaker is that the general people who is ignored in the study of history is paramount power which determine the direction of society development rather than the minority of individuals. In considering the Second World War, admittedly the triumph of this war closely related the the great political leaders' strategy. Yet, had this war only depended on the perspicacious and sagacious political leaders rather than on countless publics' support and effort, including workers, soliders, doctors, and scientists, the fascist would surly dominate our world. And, in considering the social reform, had such as Martin Luther King and Mandela failed to gain the masses' power, the Jim crow Law would impossibly been abolished, and the racism would continue to be prevalent in South Africa. In short, the advancement of our social relies on the general people who are forgotten by the study of history.
However, we should not rebuke our historian to lead to such a situation. After all, to large extent the study of history are limited by some factors, so that the history fails to represent everyone's contribution. To do this, the study of history only document some great individual because they have quality to represent the character in their contemporary time. Studying these elites can embody the spirit of countless general people. In the mean time, studying their great achievement, courage and tenacity when they encounter adversity, embolden today people to get through the quotidian business. To do this, learning about these paragons can profoundly affect people's performance. So, our doctors take great effort in enhancing the publics' healthy level, and prolonging the life; teacher spare no effort to foster our next generation; executives make a lasting and meaningful contribution to the society as a whole.
In sum, from what have been discussed, I agree with speaker's assertion that general people play a most important role in improving and precipitating the development of human being. |
