1.scandals in politics is not useful for the rulers
2.scandals in academia can improve the structure of the area
3.although they focus our attention, they suffer from criticism most of the time
The speaker asserts that scandals whether in politics, academia, or other areas can be useful, they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. While I concede that to some extent the scandals can focus our attention on problems in that area, but they are not always useful or even sometimes harmful.
Markedly, scandals in politics are always harmful for the politicians as well for the citizens. As we all know that people are more concerned about the politicians' private life than their policies. For example, several years ago, when Bill Clinton faced sex scandals, the information of his private life covered a tremendously large part of the newspapers, televisions and Internet. His scandals had become the hottest topic of the Americans or even people around the world. The reason why people were that interested in his scandal was because that they were astonished to see whether it was the president's behavior although it was such common things happening to many common people. At last, when the scandal was confirmed many people no longer supported Clinton's policy or even no longer believed in him. It is really a disaster for a politician when his or her people no longer believe in him or her. And another president who suffered from scandal is Nixon who was engaged in the Water Gate Scandal, and finally lost the position he possessed. So scandals in politics are always harmful to the politicians.
However, some scandals in some areas can improve the structure or the system of that area because the scandals come out when there are some problems existing in the areas. To better solve the problems, we need people pay attention to that area and the media plays a crucial part in this process. For instance, in 2003, a famous university in China was engaged in a scandal that in enrolling students, the officials accepted money from the students who were below the general exam marks and wanted to study in that college. Unluckily, the scandals were reported in the television and newspapers, as a result, the Department of Education drafted a policy to regulate the enrolling system and finally decreased the number of problems in enrolling. So sometimes the scandals can restructure the system to benefit the people who are not treated equally.
Needless to say, although sometimes the scandals focus the attention of people more than ever before, people in scandals always suffer from criticism. Especially in entertainment, singers or actors are often the chief roles in a scandal. But after people read the passages in the newspapers or watch on the TV or Internet, they criticize some of the singers or actors drastically no matter what the leading roles have achieved before. This indicates that although the scandals may sometimes focus the attention of the public, people who are engaged in the scandals suffer from more criticism than praise.
In conclusion, when it comes to that the scandals focus the attention of people, I fundamentally agree with the speaker's assertion. However, from my point of view, I don't think the scandals are always useful as the speaker asserts. Especially in some areas such as politics, the scandals are harmful sometimes.
