Although the conditions in which people find themselves have been largely established long before they become aware of them, the individual's responsibility is the major element to determine one's life. It is just like cooking, though every chef cooking with the same kitchenware and ingredients in a kitchen, the totally different flavor is mainly determined by the chef, rather than the kitchenware or ingredients.

The established conditions long before can affect individuals largely, but people can never abdicate the individual responsibility to the existed conditions. They should struggle against the outdated, unjust conditions for their own life. For example, Einstein, the great German Physical scientist and a Jew, lived under the Anti-Jewish government lead by Hitler. He was a German, and this is an established fact that can't be changed. So it was supposed that Einstein should to devote himself to his motherland, but he got the essence of individual responsibility: although he can't change the external situation, he must be responsible for himself and choose the right way for his own life. So he was ejected from Germany and left for America, then he work for the righteous side of the war. If he worked for the invaders and helped them to invent the atomic bomb, the result of the war may be totally different and we can't enjoy peace any more.

In addition, individual responsibility as a fundamental human rights and a cornerstone of a democratic, and harmony society. In the modern age, drug abuse has become a pervasive social phenomenon, should we accept it willingly as the existed condition that people can't change? Admittedly, this problem is so severe that exposure to drugs is common, but if we want to be healthy, alleviate school violence, and reduce crime rate we should reject drug, and persuade others to quit it. It is a sign of the civilized human to conduct the individual responsibility in one's own initiative. Besides, a sense of responsibility is crucial in ethical lives since laws can not prevent everything immoral and disciplines can not make all people obey them all the time, while well-established belief in individual responsibility can not only reduce crimes and conflicts but also provide a gentle atmosphere in working, studying and living, increasing our efficiency and social productivity. As a matter of fact, an orderly and flourish society is first based on sensitive responsibilities for the society. We can easily image the nightmare of a society where officers don’t care about their positions, parents discard their children and drivers drive over speed limit at will.


However, we shouldn't deny that some established conditions are crucial, even decisive to the individual life. Just like the nation, times, religions and such environment elements. You can hardly imagine a slave calls for human rights and an ancient woman becomes a feminist, also it is very unlike that the catholic will get divorced…

For most of us, the conditions in which people find themselves have been largely established long before they become aware of them can affect our life, but the individual's responsibility is not a trivial attribute of human behavior, but rather a central virtue, one whose very existence is increasingly being affected by the requirement to "be responsible for yourself".
