The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.

The speaker asserts that it is the descendants, but not the contemporaties, who decided the greatness of one individual. From my point of view, I strongly agree with the speaker that peope who live after could be more objective to evaluate the historical people, however, the effects of contemporaries are unforgetable.

For the first place, it is the knowledge and human nature constrains the human mind to get a full-scale understanding of the greatness of individuals. In our history, quite of a lot of marvels or the writers themselves does not get fairly assessments from their contempararies. Take Copernicus as an example. In his age, the theory that earth is the centre of the whole universe dominated astronomical mainstream for that it is supported by the Catholicism. Thus, when Copernicus pointed out the heliocentricism, few people could understand it, or even expell it. Afterward, Bruno, who backed his theory, was tried as a herotic. People live at their age could not understand their achievements, which results in the false evaluation of them. Yet, such phenomenon is understandable; after all, people at their time were lack of plentiful knowledge and instruments to investigate this theory, and it is human nature to distrust, and even shun, others who are different from them.

Secondly, many people are forced, but not spontaneous, to misinterprete the value of the great people. In our history, many people were living under oppressive political regimes or conservative religions. People are not unwilling but actually coerced into misinterpretation of the greatness of the individuals. In order to see this point clearly, let us see the Copernicus mentioned above. Indeed, people are afraid to think and behave out of the religious framework imposed on them besides the limitation of their knowledge and technology. Many of his contemporaries have radically faith in Catholics that they take for granted that geocentricism should be the orthodox theory. Especially after the death of Bruto, people who tend to touch such theory shrunk for fear of punishment and persecution by the state. As a result, contemporaries were often restrained by their religions or state.

In addition, people who lived behind the great people perform much deeper evaluation of those people. Civilization bears us the tool and knowledge and even the freedom to explore what the great people did in history. With the development of technology and science, today, we could easily demonstrate Copernicus' theory through a common abservation by a telescope. And we could also collect abundant documentation to give a better allegation of the greatness of individuals.

However, deciding the greatness of individuals only depends on the people who live after them is not enough because those people have their own limits. On one hand, the whole circumstances in which those individuals lived could not be totally reached by us. We could only grab fragments or headlines of their work, thought or lives through some records. On the other hand, we are more or less affected by their contemparaties. These documentation or reports at hand, after all, are writtened by their contemporaries; they could not be wholly objective. Based on these records and documentation, we could not get a veracious picture of the achievements of those people.

To sum up, without comtempararious, the evaluation work will be in a lack of the historical records, while, without descendants, it will be short of the scientific instrument to assess their achievement at best. Thus, while our evalutation work nessecitates contemporaries, decendents are equally important. Contemporaries serve as a mirror reflecting historical people while descendants look through the mirror to get a better evaluation.

今天想限时,可是又没成功:L:L
而且一限时什么例子都想不出来了:(:(

For the first place, it is the knowledge and human nature constrains the human mind to get a full-scale understanding of the greatness of individuals. In our history, quite of去掉 a lot of marvels用不太恰当吧!marvel是奇人,奇景。和你下面举的Copernicus不太吻合哦! or the writers themselves does not get fairly assessments from their contempararies. Yet, such phenomenon感觉不是一件事,用复数吧!phenomena is understandable; after all, people at their time were lack of plentiful knowledge and instruments to investigate this theory, and it is human nature to distrust, and even shun, others who are different from them.

Secondly, many people are forced, but not spontaneous, to misinterprete the value of the great people. As a result, contemporaries were often restrained by their religions or state.写的不错!

In addition, people who lived behind the great people perform much deeper evaluation of those people. Civilization bears us the tool and knowledge and even the freedom to explore what the great people did in history. 金子呵呵!With the development of technology and science, today, we could easily demonstrate Copernicus' theory through a common abservation by a telescope. And we could also collect abundant documentation to give a better allegation of the greatness of individuals.

However, deciding the greatness of individuals only depends on the people who live after them is not enough because those people have their own limits. To sum up, without comtempararious, the evaluation work will be in a lack of the historical records, while, without descendants, it will be short of the scientific instrument to assess their achievement at best.
Mencius said,"When heaven is about to confer a great office on any man,it first exercises his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil.It exposes his body to hunger………….By all these methods, it stimulates his mind, consolidates his character, and increases his efficiency".
