The concept of 'individual responsibility' is a necessary fiction. Although societies must hold individuals accountable for their own actions, people's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own making.

Ever since individuals' behaviors have been portrayed as accountable for their own in the complex society, many people argue that in most cases people's behavior is decided by forces rather than themselves, which is true in a sense as the whole society influence them significantly. Nevertheless, in a certain case individuals' action cannot be determined upon forces but reversely change the whole society.

Powerful forces, especially generated by the overall society, spills consequential power over individuals in their personal life into families as a whole. At the personal level, take modern society for example, a majority of people gain a special ideology and behavior in the pursuit of keeping relevant and up to date with the whole society. Although some individuals may argue that these behaviors or ideas are produced by themselves, those who claim this may overlook the potential power that cannot be discerned. Consider, there exists a substantial power in commodity society--the regularity of values--which manipulates most businessmen in certain form of influencing market's function. As this matter, scads of businessmen have to choose the most favorable investing idea for gaining more benefits. Also, contemporary culture does have impact on individuals'  behavior as a main force. Pursuing vogue clothes, primping in a special way, eating fast food, etc. Through all of these contemporary distinctive features of culture can most of them aptly lead a better life, which something they may not willingly do.

Also, in most cases, people's decisions or behaviors have to be changed so as to satisfy the mainstream of people or the authority in order to avoid unnecessarily troubles. For instance, if somebody works in the secret council he or she has to work carefully and when occurs something cannot predicted he or she has to obey government forces for its singularity of job. Moreover, as the increasingly development of society, those who lead a original life will inevitably replaced or encroached by those powerful forces. In this respect, to maintain their own freedom, to advocate the deign of individuals, those people even the whole race have to ameliorate their quotidian lives and develop the economy. In short, society's forces, especially when it experienced a changing time, have changed people's behaviors whether they are pleasure or not.

Powerful forces generated by society, be it important, suffers inevitable and unimaginable resist in certain cases. History is replete with evidence that our most wise general Napoleon, who through his own behavior changed the whole country's destiny and disseminated into the whole Europe. Similarly, in American history, the former president--Lincoln, who desperately advocated African Americans' benefits, is considered by objecting the mainstream idea in the society renowned with its slavery. Those individuals decide their own behavior and change the main ideology among a majority of people, can we regard them as determined by forces? Therefore,  these special cases indeed demonstrates that individuals' behaviors is not always determined by forces and to some extent those behaviors can reverse the mainstream.

To sum up, without society's diversity culture, individuals will not pursue such a special behavior; without increasingly improvement of society, people may decide their own ideas more freely. However, those cases are  determined on the usually basis rather than certain special ones. Sometimes people's behaviors can change the whole forces significantly.
