203. "The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines."

了解一个社会特点最好的方法是去考察被这个社会视为英雄的人们的特点。

The speaker claims that the heroes and heroines are the miniatures of the society's character. I tend to disagree with this assertion. In my observation, the heroes and heroines are not the mirror of the quality of people in the society but whose qualities the society's members want to emulate but cannot. Moreover, as the some of the qualities they have are universal and widely espoused in most of the societies, they cannot serve to distinguish characters in one society from another. Personally, to get informed of the character of a society, one should have a good mastery of the society's culture, history and customs etc.

On one hand, the preeminent qualities the heroes and heroines have are not what ordinary people in the society have but what they lack. On this account, people regard those heroes and heroines because they can realize people’s mutual dreams and goals which seem to be unattainable to people themselves. Saint Joan of Arc, the heroines who have been eulogized by French people for many generations, bravely organized the French armies to fight against the British invaders. Similarly, Mulan, the Chinese girl who served in the army force instead of her silk father also won respect and admiration from world people. It is none other than the audacity irrespective to the cruelty in the battlefields that crowns them the honor of heroines, however, their superb qualities are not what the French and Chinese women have. On the contrary, people especially women adore them just owing to fact that they themselves are not as courageous as these two young women to get involved in warfare. In light of this, we must confess that the heroes and heroines are the incarnation of the wishes of the society but not the representatives of characters of people in the society.

On the other hand, many of the heroes and heroines have the virtues that are universally meritorious thus their qualities can not be used to reflect the characteristics of a society. In other words, the similarity is of no use in quarrying the uniqueness of a society. To illustrate, comparing Yangliwei, the Chinese astronaut with the astronauts who perfectly fulfilled the Discovery's mission are actually not helpful in defining the different characters of these two distinct society-China and US, for these heroes and heroines no matter what their nationalities are, are all exalted by their compatriots for their unparalleled efforts in promoting the development of outer space exploration. Similarly, the approbation for heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives in striving for independence and freedom is also universal. Therefore, to study the heroes and heroines with the universally meritorious virtues are not helpful in finding out the characters of one society.

In addition, to better and more thoroughly analyze a society's characters, researchers should give more emphasis to the studies of the culture, customs and histories of the country. For instance, the studies of the rituals in Japan and Brazil will clearly tell you the notable differences of the characters of these two nations. With the research on the histories of China and Great Britain, you will also be well informed about the distinct characters of the two societies maybe as well as the roots of the characters.

To sum up, from what I mention above, we can conclude that the heroes and heroines can not represent the characters of members of the society and some universally meritorious qualities cannot serve to distinguish on society from another. I recommend that to better study the characters of a society, people should attach more importance to the customs, culture and histories of the society.

文章结构好，逻辑严谨，完全无法找错。语言也运用得很好，估计5.5。只能是挑点小毛病。
但是我觉得仍然有一个弱点，就是中国的例子太多，老外一下子看出来是中国人写的就不好了。尽量用让他们感到自豪的例子
我拍过的这么多文章中，这篇是最棒的，真是值得我好好学习。
