The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.

Although I concede that the groups of people greatly contribute to make the significant events and trends in history possible, I strongly disagree with the speaker. Throughout the history, the famous few such as the leaders and innovators determine the history events and trends, and learning from these famous people will benefit us on many aspects.
I concede that the group of people plays an important role in the historical events and trends. Undoubtedly, the wars tend to influence on the trends of history. So many people fight in the war for the independence of countries and freedom. They are even devoting their lives to exchange for the triumph of the significant war. Another example is the Great Wall in China, one of the greatest architecture in the world. This historic building is product of effort of million of Chinese people. This project is so important that it exert its great influence on the history of China.
However, in many events and trends in history, the famous few are the real cause for them. Consider the political leaders like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These leaders always are the decider especially in the dangerous situation. Lincoln saved the country from the disintegration and freed the slaves in America from the unjustified Slavery. Without this person, civil war might not be waged in American and the whole country was still separated. What' more, slaves might still suffer under the control of white men. However, we cannot overlook the support of common people. But compared with the effort of the leaders, their efforts are secondary.
Besides, many innovators also make the advance of technology and human culture possible. Johannes Gutenberg , the inventors of printing press, not only make the knowledge and culture in Europe accessible to every corner of the world but also increase greatly the accumulation of human knowledge. Since then, the human everywhere can absorb the knowledge of books published by all countries over the world and make a contribution to the process of human culture. Acknowledging this success of Gutenberg dues to many groups of people like the manufacturers and publishers, I think this person plays a decisive role in the trend. The invention of Tomas Edison is another convincing example to explain the role of the famous few. Before he invented the light, people live in a half dark world. The people only depend on the sunshine or use many tools like torch in order to see clear the outside world. When the day becomes dark, they cannot read books and go much far away their house because of the darkness. The invention lightens the world and facilitates almost the development of field because of the significance of the invention.
Learning about these famous few can bring us many benefits. The event of these people can help the students to understand the history better and therefore enhance the power of memory of these historic events. It might be much more acceptable for the students than mechanic memory about the events in the history. In addition, these famous people in the history inspire people to continue to explore in their career and face the adversities fearlessly.
In conclusion, although the group of people give a impetus to the events or trend in history, this study might be secondary in studying the history because the famous ones tend to determine the events and trends in the history. Furthermore, learning about these people can bring us many benefits in studying history and inspire us in our life when we face the difficulties.
