------题目------
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'
------正文------
The author believes that they should give Professor Thomas a reward of $10,000 and a promotion to Department Chairperson to avoid the leave of her. The author based his argument on the following standpoints. (1) Professor Thomas's class is among the largest at the university and this demonstrated her popularity among students. (2) She had brought a large sum of money to the university in research grants which had exceeded her salary. (3) Without the raise in the salary and the promotion, Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college. At the first blush, the contention seems reasonable and sound, but after the careful scrutiny, we can find that there are a myriad of flaws and shortcomings which render the sentiment neither convincing nor reliable.
First and foremost, the author assumes that the size of the class in relevant to the popularity of a professor. However, this assumption is unwarranted and unreliable. It is highly possible that the class she was teaching are the compulsory class and the students must study it even if they do not like it. If this is true, the author's viewpoints that Professor Thomas are popular among the students is unwarranted and it is probably that she does not deserve the money she had gotten. Maybe another professor will be more talent and more responsible for this position and Professor Thomas does not worth the salary she had got.
Furthermore, the author thinks that the money she had brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. It is highly possible that other professors also brought a big grant which had also exceeded their salaries and maybe they had brought about more money than Professor Thomas according to the salary level. If this is the case, the author will never make a sense to raise the salary of Professor Thomas. Furthermore, even if Professor Thomas really brought more money in the last two years, we can never say that it is her accomplishment considering her teaching years. It is highly possible that she had brought more money in the last two year just because there is a development of economy and the increase is just a small part considering the rapid development of economy.
Thirdly, the author amount the size of the class and the grant that she had got to the teaching and research abilities of the professor. Yet, it is not the case according to the present situation. We must the teaching ability and the research ability is relevant to the articles and the research accomplishment of a professor instead of the money they get. Considering this, we can never say that the Professor Thomas is a good professor and has a high teaching and research abilities.
Last but not least, the author posits that Professor Thomas will stay at the school if we give her a increase in salary and a promotion in position. Yet, this is not the case. The author bases his assumption on the following stand that Professor Thomas will leave the college if we do not give her the promotion and a higher salary. Maybe Professor Thomas wants to teach in Elm City University because of the harmonious atmosphere, the peaceful teaching environment, the research desire and so for. If this is true, she will stay in the school even if we do not give her the promotion and the increase of salary. It is also possible that the professor is already satisfied with her present salary and she think that there is no need to give a promotion. It is also possible that the Professor Thomas is concerned with the research and does not consider much of the management. If this is the case, the promotion to the Department Chairperson will impede the research of the Professor Thomas and this will make her less likely to stay in this university for the promotion. Thus, the author's contention will be invalid when it comes to this matter.
In summary, I can hardly agree with the author without the fulfillment of his viewpoints. To convince me, the author must show that the class size is relevant to the popularity of a professor. The author must prove that the grants can show a professor's research and teaching ability. The author must show that Professor Thomas is concerned with the salary and the promotion. Before the author can prove these things, I can hardly agree with the author. |
