The speaker asserts that we can tell much about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. However, in my opinion,
I concede that although the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests, more important factors such as customs and habits influence the value and idea of people deeply and veritably.  

Admittedly, it is true that the way people look and dress reveals the social value for the reason that the mentality exerts its effect through the appearance and behavior of people. For instance, In Islamic countries, women are not allowed to expose their body except the eyes and nose in public according to the Islamic law since people who believe in this religion deem that this behavior represents a symbol of chasteness, which appears strange to other countries’ people. From this different appearance we can understand the unique of the Islamic culture, which is dissimilar to other culture.

In addition, from behavior of individuals, the different ideas and values and also be found. Just take the dishware for example, the use of dishware in East is not the same as in West---- the former use chopsticks while the latter scoop and fork which represent the diverse opinion about eating and a series of etiquette thus formed after them. So judging the ideas of people can be from their acting such as how they eating, how they talking and the like.
  
However, we can not fully appreciate a person just through his appearance and act, more important thing is to communicate with him and know what they are thinking. With the development of the globalization, the young people may wear the same Adidas clothes, the same Jordon shoes and watch the same movie produced by Hollywood, although they are resident in different counties, educated by diverse method and knowledge, and foster in their unique cultures. moreover, the representatives all wear the suits and neckcloth when they have meetings in the house of representative though they may have diverse or even opposite thoughts about a bill. Thus, to understand what are their ideas and values, we must communicate with the young people or the representatives hold a debate with others to search out really factors that effects and dominates their opinion.

Further, in certain respects, the habits and customs of people are indicators of their attitude and values. Chinese culture is deeply rooted in Confucianism which affects most aspects of Chinese life in talking, eating, dressing, acting, thinking, and etc. for example, when a person say “how nice it is! “ to someone who just buys a delicacy watch, unlike the westerners say ”thank you” ,the person would says ” not so nice, not so nice.’ This is the attitude of condescension which is prevailing in Chinese culture. In other countries we could also see the power of customs and habits that shape individuals’ idea and value.
  
In sum, the statement recognizes that the appearance and behavior informs us the ideas and values of people, yet the speaker aggrandizes the effect as these are not the determinate factors to distinguish the different opinions. While the customs and habits authentically represent the true value and attitude of people in society.

I tend to agree with the speaker's broad assertion that the appearance and behavior of people in a society reveals its values and ideas. However, the speaker unnecessarily extends this broad assertion to embrace thoughts and values deeply rooted in people's mind, which could not be recognized only by people's behavior.

As for some superficial and direct parts of the value system, I concede that these values or ideas could be perceived by the way they look, dress or act. Several examples aptly illustrate this point. Consider the Germans labeled by their careful attitude, it is easy to find this character lied in the brain of the Germans by their behavior. Reports said there was once a child waiting at the crossing of the road for the traffic light, unfortunately, the traffic was broken and never turned green. Thus the child waited for a long time, he preferred waiting to breaking the rule. Such behavior could wonderfully illustrate Germans' attitude towards the rule - the rule is rule, you should not break it anywhere, any when. Similarly, countries which banned costumes like short skirts tend to hold strict religion all over the country, like the Middle East countries such as Iran and Iraq. Psychologists, epitomized in Freud, have pointed out that people's behaviors are largely dependent on their values and actions. Furthermore, people's interests could be realized by the way they look. A good example which could illustrate this point is that from what a football fan's appearance, most of time you could tell exactly which team he favors or supports. For instance, he who painted his/her face with orange color is perhaps a fan of Holland. Following the psychological way it seems easy to understand people's values. In a word, the culture of a society could be sensed by their life.

However, although sometimes it is possible to sense people's general attitude or the character of a society, we should be circumspect that this attitude is vague and often superficial. In other words, people's attitude towards philosophical facts or to ethics or moral aspects is not likely to sense by their appearance. People who dress in various costumes, act in different ways, behave distinguishly different can share the same religion. For instance, we understand that American's behaviors or costumes varied in such a way that we even could not tell they belong to the same society. But it does not follow that they do not share the same belief. Reports claim that 90 percent of Americans believe in God, which could not be recognized by their behaviors or appearance. Still, although countries in middle east share almost the same costumes or even acts, their attitudes vary so much that conflicts occur continuously in that area. From that point we could see clearly that people's attitude towards ethics, moral, politics, religion could not be accessed by the way they look or act. And ultimately we could conclude that people's behaviors or appearances can not reflect their attitudes towards mental affairs.

To sum up, it is easy to judge people's attitude or interests towards affairs of life just by their appearance or behaviors. Nevertheless, judging people's attitude on social affairs or politics seem to be uneasy, for they sometimes cannot be represented by what people wear but by what people hold or declare.
