Issue10
"Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated."
---------

Embracing overwhelming trend of urbanization and globalization, most nations are striving for the economic and industrial development of their major cities, as well as the preservation of their cultural traditions. However, financial supports for these two tasks are equal obligations to the governments but not necessarily the same issue.

Firstly, in this era of local culture and social structure are shaped by large and powerful commercial interests, the major cities play a minor role in generating or saving cultural traditions . Globalization, marked by the advancement in communication, transportation, and information technologies, have changed the nature of culture and culture exchanges, particularly in large and modernized cities worldwide. People in these metropolises share the cultures that cross national boundaries rather than traditional ones. For instance, mastery in English and computer become a essential skill for a graduate to pursue a good job in Asian cities. The citizens' daily lives in these cities also have closely contact with cultural exports such as Mcdonald's meals, Hollywood films and Grammy music, and Internet , as well as other technological products. Therefore, it is helpless for the governments to seek to the large cities for the purpose of conserving the nation's traditions.

Secondly, a nation's cultural traditions--its rituals, inimitable cuisine, folk arts and music and ethical styles of dress--actually sprouted in small towns and rural areas. These regions are endowed with unattached natural and cultural resources which are absolutely different from the urban districts that function like a melting pot of multiple cultures. Nevertheless, unsophisticated residences in these regions might be unconscious of the cultural significance of their traditions, and may accordingly bring on unintentional demolishment to the precious cultural heritage. One peculiar culture phenomenon of China's northeast countryside--a ancient language along with corresponding character and calligraphy which is only understood and communicated by female , for example, was nearly in the brink of extinction until the government took action. In this case, government's instructions and subsidizations aiming to save the cultures in suburban areas, especially in those impoverished ones, is an urgent need.

Admittedly, the major cities are worth financial support from governments. The main reason is not related to the culture field but to the economic sector. Featured in vivid industrial and commercial markets, as well as large population, cities of this kind are always reflections of national civilization level and a key strength of regional economies. A case in point goes to the Chinese government's favorable fiscal policies toward its coastal cities, such as Shanghai and Shenzhen, which are considered as the pioneers of China's modernization. Sound development of these cities--which is ensured by the government’s financial bolster, benefits not only the cities themselves but also the whole market economy of country. Furthermore, those cities with historic sites, take Beijing in China, Paris in France, New York in United States and Athens in Greece for instance, also deserve sufficient financing in order to protect the famous points of interests from being eroded by nature or shattered by tourists. In a word, it pays for governments to invest on either commerce or tourism of a large and well-constructed city in order to catalyze a booming economy.

In conclusion, to preserve the distinct cultural traditions, the government should appeal to the pristine corner on the vast land of the country. As for the financial assistances to the main city, it primarily contributes to the industrial and commercial prosperity of the nation, not to the traditional cultures, which reside elsewhere.

People in these metropolises 牛!!share the cultures that cross national    boundaries rather than traditional ones. 这句分析的太透彻了~~学习ingFor instance, mastery in English and computer become a essential skill for a graduate to pursue a good job in Asian cities. The citizens' daily lives in these cities also have closely contact with cultural exports such as Mcdonald's meals, Hollywood films and Grammy music, and Internet , 这几个东西并列起来好象不太好吧as well as other technological products.
