I partly agree with this contention to an extent, but  I must admit that the popularity of such nonmainstream areas would play an negative role in the progression of our society.
  In the first place, these non-mainstream areas of inquiry address certain human needs, which mainstream science and other areas of intellectual inherently cannot. For the one hand, our science and technology is not so developed that many occurrences we cannot control or even explicit. But as human beings, we are curiosity and so eager to explore the world much more than we could by science. As a result, these nonmainstream areas come out as an interception of the world in another way which science cannot deal with. On the other hand, we must admit that we mankind are vulnerable and helpless in a sense. Everybody, however powerful and rich, would not elude the fact that we are mortal. This awareness is somewhat unacceptable, which motivate us try to believe that there is still a another world after death. As a result, these nonmainstream areas untrap us from such bewilderment. It is the function that science cannot perform. Both of the reasons revelation that these nonmainstream areas are somewhat a supplement to meet human beings needs  
  In the second place, these nonstream areas provide us a faith that leads some people to live with less pain. The world around us is not as perfect as we expect, since it is congested with unjustness, poverty, hungry, etc. These nonmainstreams somewhat conform these people to an extent that they still have a belief that they will live better afterlife which relief them from the pains they are suffering in present life.
  However, if the function of these nonstreams is overqualified, the consequence is significant to our society. The popularity of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits will definitely impetus the progression of science and technology, which is the ultimate force bring us to have better lives. Moreover, once these nonmainstreams is utilized by someone, it will do great harms to our human beings ever than we can expect. We should never overlook the dramatic force that these nonmainstream release.
  In sum, I concede that nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, and paranormal pursuits indeed satisfy our mankind in some aspect that science could not deal with in a long time. However, it is impetus us to explore the world if we depend too much on it.
