Issue172. "Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is final goal of most scientist and socialists to pursue important truths during their whole lives, ironically, in most cases, truths begin as outrageous or uncomfortable and it is hard to be accepted by scientists and experts in that time, let alone the normal people. In the river of history, there are numerous examples dedicating that it needs a long and painful time to accept the important truths.
Truths, always correct wrong theory which has been accepted as a right theory for a long time by most people. When the new theory conflicts with the old one, people used to keeping what they had accepted before. It is hard or impossible for people to discard the original beliefs. Especially, when important truths, which are brought forward by unfamous people, contrary to the current authoritative views, people always regard the new view or theory as wrong. For example, in 16th century, most people believed Aristotle’s theory that “the object’s falling speed is in proportion to its weight”, whereas Italy scientist Galileo found the falling speed only related to the gravity and falling time. Of course, people did not accept the “crazy thought” in that time. However, the famous Pisa Tower experiment proved the truth.
Sometimes, important truths open a new knowledge door for people where they never know or think of. Accepting a total new theory or view, especially in abstract field, is beyond people’s understanding and comprehension. So people maybe feel it is outrageous or comfortable to accept strange or erratic theory or view. An instance in mathematic field can throw a light on it, a Greece scientist Pythagoras thought there was only one kind of number – rational number -- in the world, and his theory was accepted by all people as a right one, except one of his student who found another kind of number—irrational number. In that time, no one accepted the important truth and the founder of irrational number was through into the sea by angered people.
Normally, the old theory and view had developed well and was advocated by the current authority for a long time. That is to say, the stability of old system is closely link to the stability of authorities, including their fames, their social status, even their benefits. In order to protect themselves, authorities cannot permit any new theory and view conflicting with what they hold to be accepted. Therefore, they would try their best to cut the throat of the important truths in the beginning stage, and prevent truths from developing. There are countless historical stories demonstrating it, and Copernicus is famous one. In 16th century, Christianity supported geocentricism, however, Copernicus put forward contrary theory --- heliocentricism, which was regarded as heresy by Christianities because it did not accord with the Bible.
In a word, because the limit of human being and unperfected during the development of science and society, truths is hard to accepted in the beginning. Fortunately, people and the civilization always develop and make progress eventually, so truths will be accepted at last.
