TOPIC:ISSUE 185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS:503                DATE:2005-12-20
3.speaker and reformer

The speaker claims that scandals can call our attention in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Although this assertion has its merits, in my view, scandals does not always play in positive ways and the role of speakers and reformers should no be looked over.

It is true that scandals can bring people's attention to some problems that no other ways could. The bankruptcy of Enron Company serves as an apt illustration of this point. Placing in the seventh of the five hundred strongest companies, Enron was once recognized as proud. However, the financial scandal of this company gives people certain alarm. Before this, people believed that the financial system in America is perfect. But after this, people pay more attention on the financial problems of big company. This causes the increased the level of financial scrutiny of these companies, which would work significant and lasting benefit for shareholders and owners of the company, and also the society. So, sometime, scandals are more effective than speakers and reformers for these people even do not realize the potential problems.

However, scandals do not always play an active role. The negative effect of them should not be forgotten. Human beings have a nature to be like to hear and even produce scandals. And some scandals serve no benefit of the society but only this human nature. For example, Kobe, a basketball player, his sex scandal, neither can call people's attention to certain social problem nor can bring people any benefit, but only serves to be talked about by people after meals. Also, sometimes some people with certain goal would produce scandal to achieve it. Mark Twain's Running for Governor serves as a perfect example. The competitors in the election would produce any scandals to ruin Mr. Twain's reputation to force him out of the candidate. Thus, as for some scandals serve no benefits and even do harm to the society, we should be careful and make rational judgment of own when hearing scandals.

Also, the role of speakers and reformers should not be looked over, for they are effective in most circumstances. Through their ability to inspire others and lift human spirit, few would disagree that Gandhi and Martin Luther King were eminently effective in leading others to effect social change by civil disobience. Were not their effective role, the Indian may still be the colony of the Britain and African American may be relegated to the backs of buses. Another example is the president Roosevelt, who reformed the economic system and let government play an active role the market economy. All these can not be achieved by scandals.

In sum, scandals can call out attention for people have the nature to focus on them. So when scandals can reflect some problems of the society, they will be useful. Otherwise they also have no value or even harm the society. Also, on the whole, speakers and reformers play more important role when it comes to social problems although scandals can provide special perspective.

3.speaker and reformer

The speaker claims that scandals can call our attention in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Although this assertion has its merits,[学习一下] in my view, scandals does not always play in positive ways and the role of speakers and reformers should no be looked over.

This causes the increased the[the要去掉吧?] level of financial scrutiny of these companies, which would work significant and lasting benefit for shareholders and owners of the company, and also the society. So, sometime, scandals are more effective than speakers and reformers for these people even do not realize the potential problems.[觉得这个例子并没有被很好的利用。

However, scandals do not always play an active role. The negative effect of them should not be forgotten. Human beings have a nature to be like[like作形容词是相象,做动词才是喜欢。此处应该是to like.但是不确定nature to like对不对。 Like to hear and even produce scandals are human’s nature.] to hear and even produce scandals. And some scandals serve no benefit of the society but only this human[human’s] nature. For example, Kobe, a basketball player, his sex scandal, neither can call people's attention to certain social problem[建议换成对篮球的了解或者对有他参加的赛事的关注,因为就算没有性丑闻一个篮球运动员也不会引起公众对社会问题的关注。如果有人把对性丑闻的议论看作是对社会问题的关注,文中的这句话将会成为别人攻击你论证错误的把柄] nor can bring people any benefit, but only serves to be talked about by people after meals.

Through their ability to inspire others and lift human spirit, few would disagree that Gandhi and Martin Luther King were eminently effective in leading others to effect social change by civil disobience[什么词?]. Were not their effective role, the Indian may still be the colony of the Britain and African American may be[建议加个still] relegated to the backs of buses. Another example is the president Roosevelt, who reformed the economic system and let[建议换成make] government play an active role[是否少了个介词? 请指教] the market economy. All these can not be achieved by scandals.

In sum, scandals can call out attention for people have the nature to focus on them. So when scandals can reflect some problems of the society, they will be useful. Otherwise they also have no value or even harm the society. Also, on the whole, speakers and reformers play more important role when it comes to social problems although scandals can provide special perspective.[上文说演说家和改革家的作用不可忽视,这里说他们更重要,是否缺少论证?
