9.The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.

"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

This argument’s conclusion is that to guarantee its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors. To justify this conclusion the argument points out that the new evaluation procedure leads the student grads have raised by thirty percent. Also, the arguments points out that the inflation grads of Omega University the students are the reason that Omega graduates can not be as successful as the graduates form the nearby Alpha University at finding jobs. I found the argument unpersuasive, for several reasons.


First of all, a 30% increase of Omega University student’s grades does not necessarily indicate that it is the effect of teaching evaluation. Although a 30% increase seems significant, attending the evaluation, the students may feel be confirmed and be more diligent. Meanwhile, the professors may also improve the teaching skills which make the students master knowledge better. Or the students may be more excellent than the students before the evaluation. Lacking the analysis why the score is higher than before, it is dubious that the argument just makes the assumption that the professors assign higher grades because of the teaching assessment.

Furthermore, there is necessary relation between employability and average grades. On one hand, the major of the students affects whether the students will be hired. Some are hot and it is easy to get one job, while others are the contrary. The argument fails to tell us about the major and whether major is the same as before during these fifteen years. On the other hand, the overall quantity of graduates is one of factors which affect the employability.The job demand of the society is another factors .Actually, there are many other factors decide whether the students will be fired. It is unfair to say that it is the higher grades that lead the students’ failure in finding the jobs.


Last but not least, the argument fails to provide some other information. The author should specify the number of unemployed students who just graduated from Omega University before the evaluation process have been used. By this information, readers can easily conclude that the low rate of employment in this university results from the evaluation process or not. whether evaluation process has also been used at Alpha University or not. Without this major basic background, it is difficult to conclude that graduates at Alpha University have been successful to be hired simply because this university does not use the evaluation procedure.

It is not a short time for fifteen years compared to the rapid and complex development of the university and society. There are so many factors which will affect graduates to secure better jobs. The conclusion this argument gets is unpersuasive as it stands. To bolster it the argument’s author must show ---perhaps by way of reliable study---what is the real reason that affects the students’ employ. It seems not sagacious to terminate student evaluation of professors which is the good way to improve the learning and teaching, after all.
