【题目】Issue144(526words)
"It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value."
【翻译】是艺术家而不是批评家,给了社会一些永久的价值。
【提纲】
观点:艺术的持久价值不仅源于艺术家本身创作,也与评论家有关。
1、艺术家们给了社会长久的价值。
一方面艺术家带给人们美的享受;或给人精神的鼓励;
另一方面使人们了解社会更深层次的东西,这些都是永久的价值
2、批评家也有他们的作用,他们帮助大众了解艺术作品,更好地欣赏作品;
3、但是有些时候批评家起反面的作用,如当艺术需要创新变革的时候批评家可能阻碍艺术的进步,而且容易被政治所利用;
4、总结
【正文】
What is the lasting value of art? Although there are enormous established markets for art, which sells works by famous masters for millions of dollars, the true and lasting value of art is based on what an artist puts into it and what the viewer takes away from it. It is both the artist as well as critic make a work valuable for long, as I explain below.

On the one hand, the external value is originated from its own, in other words, created by the artist. For one thing, artist creates the work bring beauty for people to enjoy or give them spiritual encouragement. Such as Mona Lisa, which appears to be a so beautiful and comfortable picture to everyone; And Chopin, his music always has the magic power to smooth the soul of human being and thus gives them power of survive. For another, some artists try to edify people to know the reality of society by creating words. Mark Twain is an example of such artists, and this edificatory effect will finally become the lasting value of the work. In a word, the work itself is the headstream of its lasting value, which is attributed to its creator, the artist.

On the other hand, critics help a real work to be discovered, deemed and appreciated by the masses, through the way of introducing and evaluating. First and foremost, critics bring a better understanding to the art. For instant, a novel with a short and incisive comment on the front page gives the reader an overview of the whole work; a drawing or piece of music with several words can arose viewers inspiration of imagination, and this will finally lead to the creation of permanent value. Second, as an old saying described, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", which reveals the true and lasting value of art is in the eye and experience of the viewer. We sometimes hang onto faded posters or tattered postcards for years, just because they depict a work of art we value. Art that speaks to a person, that touches a person, that makes a person comfortable or unsettles a person — all this art has great value for the person that is beyond price. Therefore, a masterpiece without introduction from critic may count for nothing.

Nevertheless, critics is not always exerting good influence on art, sometimes especially when a revolution in art occurred, they may appear to be a baffling strengthen, rather than an advancer to the lasting value of art. The work of Shakespeare is a striking example. Voltaire had once opposed his work for the reason that they didn’t conform to neo-classical principles. Besides, when critics prove to be a baffling power, it is usually utilized by government and politics. Mark Twain used to be animadverted by the government, for the disclosing of corruption in his work. In this case, critics may even destroy the lasting value of art, let alone enhance it.

To sum up, the eternal merit is firstly created by the artist, its author, and then discovered or enhanced by critics while sometimes this advancement may turn over to be a hindrance.

What is the lasting value of art? Although there are enormous established markets for art, which sells works by famous masters for millions of dollars, the true and lasting value of art is based on what an artist puts into it and what the viewer takes away [总觉得take away好像不太恰当,能不能换个词呢] from it. It is both the artist as well as critic make a work valuable for long, as I explain below.

On the one hand, the external value is originated from its own, in other words, created by the artist. For one thing, artist creates the work [这里要不要加个and?] bring beauty for people to enjoy or give them spiritual encouragement. Such as Mona Lisa, which appears to be a so beautiful and comfortable picture to everyone; And Chopin, his[whose] music always has the magic power to smooth the soul of human being and thus gives them power of survive. For another [加上thing或者one], some artists try to edify people to know the reality of society by creating words[words好像也不太合适,能不能换成articles或者novels].

For instant [instance], a novel with a short and incisive comment on the front page gives the reader an overview of the whole work; a drawing or piece of music with several words can arose viewers inspiration of imagination, and this will finally lead to the creation of permanent value. Second, as an old saying described, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", which reveals the true and lasting value of art is in the eye and experience of the viewer. We sometimes hang onto faded posters or tattered postcards for years, just because they depict a work of art we value. Art that speaks to a person, that touches a person, that makes a person comfortable or unsettles [用unsettle意思不对吧] a person — all this art [是不是这里要用复数?] has great value for the person that is beyond price. Therefore, a masterpiece without introduction from critic may count for nothing.

Nevertheless, critics is not always exerting good influence on art, sometimes especially when a revolution in art occurred, they [如果这里用they,前面的critics是不是要用复数?] may appear to be a baffling strengthen, rather than an advancer to the lasting value of art. The work of Shakespeare is a striking example. Voltaire had once opposed his work for the reason that they didn’t conform to neo-classical principles. Besides, when critics prove to be a baffling power, it is usually utilized by government and politics. To sum up, the eternal merit is firstly created by the artist, its author, and then discovered or enhanced by critics while sometimes this advancement may turn over to be a hindrance.
