THE introduction of the post-UME test in Nigerian universities is of course a welcome development. The wide spread praise   it has attracted is because, any measure which is aimed at stemming the tide of intellectual gate crashing into our universities and enhancing  the quality of our graduates deserves necessary  accolades  and unflinching support. Indeed, any well-meaning citizen should show great concern about the unceasing depreciation in the quality or standard of tertiary education（tertiary education 高等教育） in  the country. In a sense, the quality of tertiary education has unarguably declined.

Stockwatch: CMO purchases LCD production equipment

Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) today announced the purchase of NT$545.5 million (US$17.1 million) worth of equipment from Koyo Thermo Systems.

The company did not state what type of equipment was being purchased.

Japan-based Koyo considers itself a leader for heat treatment processing of flat panel displays, with its main process focus being glass plate anneal, seal pre-cure, seal main cure, phosphor anneal and polyimide cure.

Wild teens
Last week, we reported on the same day two separate incidents involving young people in our area.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Department had arrested three teenagers for a crime spree that ranged from vandalism to burglary and from stolen vehicles to hot checks.
Aurora police Chief Rick Batson had sought charges against 22 Aurora High School students stemming from a series of incidents during and after the Jan. 20 basketball game with Mount Vernon.
While they are different kinds of incidents, the common thread is the age of the suspects, all in their mid to late teens. As the father of a teenager myself, I believe two things:
1) The vast majority of youth are good and kind people who, while perhaps guileless at times, are far smarter and more savvy than those of the previous generation at that age. Anybody who has spent time with Tomorrow’s Leaders Today will, I’m sure, back me up.
2) Many good teens have bouts of knuckleheadedness that defy description or prediction.
Still, these incidents seem out of place, a kind of disturbing warp in the normal order. We, as parents and community members, I suggest, must take some responsibility for mass incidents of this kind.
What have we set up ... what haven’t we set up ... what message has failed that would (allegedly, of course) send these kids screaming across the boundaries to curdle the milk of human kindness?
It is worth a ponder or two.

Trees aren't falling for city's false spring
Although Toronto is having its warmest January on record, the city's deciduous trees haven't been fooled. They have remained dormant throughout the month, which reduces the risk of damage if February turns in its usual frigid performance, says Richard Ubbens, Toronto's director of forestry.

Temperatures recorded this month are usually felt in March, and the amounts of snow and rain are more like an average April, Environment Canada climatologist Dave Phillips said yesterday.

The wet, mild winter has  reduced the chance of salt damage to trees, he said, and not just because it means that the city and other municipalities use less salt.

The fine dusty salt that ends up on streets after they dry tends to blow onto trees and desiccate them, he said. But the rain has washed it off the trees and the ground, and "that's terrific."

Lengthening. Lengthening mascaras add length to short lashes with special filament-type fillers — lashes are enhanced, but still natural-looking. The formula is thinner in consistency than the thickening variety so it goes on in sheer coats. The thin, widely spaced bristles on the brush wand of lengthening mascaras define lashes without adding bulk.

As Torch Nears, Worries and Woes Flicker

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 9 — The protesters here certainly know what they don't like: war, globalization, capitalism, drug laws, immigrant detention centers, a high-speed train line and, inexplicably, the Olympic torch.

"This is a discussion of war," said Claudio Robba, 25, one of maybe 150 protesters at a piazza, referring, in fact, to a well-designed stick with a little flame on top.

But clarity is not the point, and on Thursday, the eve of the Winter Games, the protesters managed to generate enough worry that Olympic organizers, for the third time in recent days, diverted the path of the torch relay to avoid them.

The protesters claimed victory, but the general feelings were anger and embarrassment that Italy, which had meticulously prepared for the event for a decade, was having trouble getting the torch cleanly to the Olympic Stadium, where on Friday night it is supposed to light the caldron and officially open the Games.
