issue 153 "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
1. 怀疑的作用
2. 人类发展史就是一个不断怀疑在更改的过程
3. 提倡合理的怀疑
Today’s society encourage students to question whatever they learn instead of admitting everything submissively, from which students can develop the ability of thinking independently and strengthen the understanding of what they learn. While, in my opinion, overemphasizing this certain skepticism would provide no useful guidance, even harmful effect to study.
To begin with, we can not deny the significance of skepticism, which lead us to cultivate the attitude towards consider and study by our own and reveal the essence of everything under the surface. On the one hand, when student question what they learn from their teachers and books, it is necessarily indicates that they study into this question and use their own minds to reason about. And to find out the true answer of this question, students would search for more information independently by all means, such as, in other books or on the internet. From this process of search, students would not only strengthen the understanding of the question they reasoned about, but also acquire more knowledge to other extent. On the other hand, as Edison once said ( and I paraphrase), “ A brain which can always have some questions is a prodigious fortune of human beings.” Keeping the attitude of skepticism and habit of looking for the real answer is a fundamental skill for learning.
In addition, the process of question and learning is the epitome of human being’s advancement from naive and nescience to complex and knowledgeable. We could better understand this point of view by comprehend these philosophical questions, philosophers wonder three fundamental questions at the first brush: Do our consciousness really objectively exist? If they exist, can we recognize them? If we can, can we give expression to them by our language? Thanks to these questions, not only philosophers but also other scientists and arts are conscious the source and the future of our human nature and take part in the campaign for perceiving everything in the world and creating a lot of inventions for a better life. And also in this process, it embrace a series of skepicizing, theorizing, applying and skepicizing again, which bring about development in cognization in human beings.
However, admitting the advance of skepticism does not necessarily indicate that we could go to extreme and question everything at all time and become cynicism to the world. If one takes the skepticism as the aim of study, but not only constitution of the process for study, he or she would lose himself/herself in the bog of questions everywhere when he or she looks into the world. And deny everything’ exist and rightness is irrational and naïve, which would lead to a counterproductive effect—he or she cannot learn anything from others. Hence, we should learn to appreciate others’ merits and study from them after we have a suspicious eye to scrutiny.
In sum, the development history of human being is filled with skepticism and reconsideration, thus, an appropriate question, which is totally different to over-skepticism, is needed for the education of next generation to shape their brain and strengthen the understanding of the world.
