The greatness of people is reflected by not only the contribution to the evolvement of society but also influence on the populace. When we evaluate the significance of person in specific domain, we should judge by different standards based on various characteristic of every specific field. Who has the authority to assess the greatness? Contemporary or afterworld? In my point of view, the answer depends on the specialized character of different areas.

When it comes to the business, the greatness of business leader can be easily judged by contemporaries. Common sense tells us the final objective of business is to maximize profits and minimize costs. Thus the responsibility for the business manager is clear, that is to administrate the company in order to create as many financial profits as they could. When a company earns good money we can doubtless say that the supervisor of the company has excellent lead capability and a hard business head. Similarly as any company declares its bankruptcy to the public, we can certainly assert that the manager is lack of strategy. One needs to look further than Bill Gates the No1 wealthy in the world. The contemporaries assess him as a great person. Because the business affair has a singular and clear goal, contemporaries rather than descents can point out whether a businessman prominent or not.

Consider the politics area, it is the same with business. Any eminent politician has only one dream that is to bring about stability for the society and happiness for the citizens. All a political leader should do is to eliminate the reasonless rules and set up rational regulations. Prominent political leaders come into mind immediately such as Martin Luther and Gandhi who adhere to their conviction by the ways of diminishing race discrimination and rejecting colonialism in India. For
the purpose of creating justice and independent for their people, they would like to abandon their own freedom. It is undeniable to recognize them as political giants.

With respect of academic field, we have to rely on our offspring to give answers for the greatness of a theory can not be recognized at once. Academic is so complicated that contemporaries are even unable to judge whether the theory is reasonable or ridiculous. Take Bruno for example, his conviction is certainly right. However, he was unfortunate to be sentenced to death as his claim was not accepted by church at that time. Thousands of years later, scientists affirm his contribution for the advancement of science. This vivid instance illustrates that contemporaries have no ample ability to do the assessment because vast majority of them are confined to the limited knowledge in the related areas.

As for the art field, the significance of artists is determined only by contemporaries as well. The primary function of art is to reflect the societal situation according to their ages thoroughly and deeply. One who understands nothing about the temporal society cannot review the artwork objectively and correctly. History is replete with examples that the invaluable artwork was highly remarked by the contemporaries. The artwork is represented the obvious traits of society.
