TOPIC:ISSUE 36
Issue36 "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS:690        DATE:2006-2-14

(690 words)
As a subject way of evaluating, is the greatness of individuals exclusively decided by people living after them? The author claims so. However, to my viewpoint, contemporaries, though not so superior to the descendants, may also discover the famous few with greatness belonging to their same era, subject to two restraints of various laws for judging as well as the limit knowledge.

Process to decide the individuals' greatness is subject, variable accords with the judgers' era, knowledge held, social customs and environment, thus may appear quite surprising or even totally reverse results by different people.
We are so quite different with our ancestors, and will also various with people after us. We hold a newer, developing, high-technique, aesthetic perspective while our predesors are relative old and out-fashioned and the descendants are more advantageous. And this disclose, at least somewhat, the difference between people of comporary and their descendants.

First, on the one hand, greatness of someone is easily turn down under unsuitable judging laws in its same period. As time pass by, laws of evaluation is advancing, changing, and more content is involved, when the rejective recognition of someone's greatness may turn out to be acceptable. Look at Van Gogh, in the world of art. He almost got amazing in his epoch, impoverished, crazy-quite humble and his paintings were so hard to sell, let alone how cheap they were. This is the so-called honor that his era gives him. After hundreds of years, Van Gogh is no longer the one of his period; he is a person with big greatness winning would wide respects, a zenith of art skill, a sign and pronoun of most great painters. How could he get them all? Who decides, or correctly speaking, discovers his greatness? It is his decedents, people living after him, using different way to see and judge his works that decide and find his greatness.

On the other hand, because of limit and incomprehensive knowledge, people are hardly to understand and accept the discovery, invention, creation and so forth of their contemporaries, and thus miss lots of people with greatness. This is more prosaically in the scientific realm. So many knowledge or laws of science was widely recognized after its discoverer died many years. This is not enough. More absurdly, some great people without acknowledged even encountered persecution if their ideas or thinking are contradict to the main stream of the society, no matter this main stream are correct or not. Bruno, a guy holding on his belief of sun-centered theory, was burned by church man of his same era. And the theory’s discover, Copernicus, published his guess at his old age almost until he was going to die, only for fear of the resistant strength from church. These unacknowledged great few in their era, of course, left to their descendants, the ones having more knowledge, for a right judgment.

However, it is not to deny contemporaries do not decide the greatness of other at all, on the contrary they does, though may not for all. Think of these people: Newton and Einstein, famous scientists who already well known in their own era; Mozart approved of his music talent at early age; Picasso, first developing cubism and loved by people in him period; Lincoln or Martin Luther King, respected by their people for fighting against slavery and Bill Gates who creative a myth called software with plenty of admiration from his contemporaries. From science to art, from polity to economic, there have been people whose greatness was decided by people in their period. Besides, people are advancing step by step with more and more knowledge, and the more we know, the more people with greatness can be decided by us at the contemporary era.

All in all, the greatness of some is surly first created by him or her, themselves, and then evaluated or judged by others. Thanks to different standard for evaluating or judging, as well as knowledge limit, descendants are superior to contemporaries in this decision of greatness. And with the fast development of human beings, more and more people with greatness would be recognized at his own era.

As a subject[subjective] way of evaluating, is the greatness of individuals exclusively decided by people living after them? The author claims so. However, to my viewpoint, contemporaries, though not so superior to the descendants, may also discover the famous few with greatness belonging to their same era, subject to two restraints of various laws for judging as well as the limit [limited] knowledge.

Process to decide the individuals' greatness is subject [subjective], variable accords with the judgers' era, knowledge held, social customs and environment, thus may appear quite surprising or even totally reverse results by different people.
We are so quite [so 和quite只要用一个吧,两个我怎么读着就别扭呢] different with our ancestors, and will [be] also various with people after us. We hold a newer, developing, high-technique, aesthetic perspective while our predesors [ancestors?] are relative old and out-fashioned and the descendants are more advantageous. And this disclose, at least somewhat, the difference between [people of comporary] [contemporary] and their descendants.

First, on the one hand, greatness of someone is easily turn[turned] down under unsuitable judging laws in its same period. After hundreds of years, Van Gogh is no longer the one of his period; he is a person with big greatness winning would wide respects[这句看不懂来,语法不太对], a zenith of art skill, a sign and pronoun of most great painters.

However, it is not to deny [it is no doubt that] contemporaries do not decide the greatness of other at all, on the contrary they does, though may not for all. Think of these people: Newton and Einstein, famous scientists who [had been] already well known in their own era; Mozart approved of his music talent at early age; Picasso, first developing cubism and loved by people in him period; Lincoln or Martin Luther King, respected by their people for fighting against slavery and Bill Gates who creative a myth called software with plenty of admiration from his contemporaries.[强啊,这么多例子啊] From science to art, from polity to economic, there have been people whose greatness was decided by people in their period.

[By] the [subjective] way of evaluating, is the greatness of individuals exclusively decided by people living after them? The author claims so. However, to my viewpoint, contemporaries, though not so superior to the descendants, may also discover the famous few with greatness [of] their same era, subject to two restraints of various [standard] for judging as well as the [limited] knowledge.

Process of deciding the individuals' greatness accords with the judgers' era, knowledge, and social environment, subjective and variable, thus may achieve quite surprising or even totally reverse results by different people. We are so different with our ancestors, and will also [be] various with people after us. We hold a newer, developing, high-technological and aesthetic perspective while our ancestors are relative out-fashioned as well as the descendants are more advanced. This [discloses], at least somewhat, the difference between people of the same era and the ones live after them.

First, on the one hand, greatness of someone is easily [turned] down under undue contemporary judging standard. However, as time pass by, the standard of evaluation is advancing, changing, with more content involved, and the rejective recognition of someone's greatness may turn out to be acceptable. Look at Van Gogh, in the world of art. He almost got amazing in his epoch, impoverished, crazy and humble. His paintings were so hard to sell, let alone how cheap they were. This is the so-called honor that his era gives him. After hundreds of years, Van Gogh is no longer the [unacknowledged one at] his period, but a person with big greatness [and worldwide] respects, a zenith of art skill, a sign and pronoun of most great painters. The two different evaluations from people in different eras tell us that it is just decedents, the people living after him, can better see and understand the greatness of this outstanding painter, using a quite different way from his contemporaries.

On the other hand, because of limited and incomprehensive knowledge, people are hardly to understand and accept the discovery, invention, creation and so forth [by] their contemporaries, and thus miss understanding lots of peoples’ greatness. This [exists] more prosaically in the scientific realm. So many knowledge or scientific laws were widely recognized only after its discoverer died many years. This is not enough. More absurdly, some great people not yet acknowledged even encountered persecution if their ideas or thinking were contradict to the main stream of their society, no matter this main stream are correct or not. Bruno, a guy holding on his belief of sun-centered theory, was burned by church man of his same era. And the theory’s discover, Copernicus, published his guess at his old age-almost until he was going to die, for fear of the resistant strength from the church. These unacknowledged great few in their era, of course, left to their descendants, the ones having more knowledge, for a right judgment.

However, it is not to deny contemporaries can decide the greatness of others, though may not for all. Think of these people: Newton and Einstein, famous scientists who already known in their own era; Mozart, approved of his music talent at early age; Picasso, the one first developing cubism and loved by people in his period; Lincoln or Martin Luther King, public officials respected by their people for fighting against slavery and Bill Gates, a businessman who creates a myth called software with plenty of admiration from his contemporaries. From science to art, from polity to economic, there have been people whose greatness was decided by ones living in their own period. Besides, people are advancing step by step with more and more knowledge, and the more humans know, the more people with greatness can be decided by others at the contemporary era.
