With the startling advancement of technology, video camera becomes prevailing in the daily life of mundane. More and more people use the new technology tool to document interesting affairs happening around themselves. However, is that phenomena justified the assertion that video camera is more important than written record? The answer is certainly no. while camera has its own peculiar advantage such as clearness and vividness, written records remain their indispensable characteristics which camera can not substitute for.

When it comes to video camera, the first conspicuous merit comes into my mind is accurate and convincing. Due to the evolvement of photography, the photograph attained by camera is so accurate that one can hardly differentiate the actual situation from the photograph. One can be able to replay the scene which they are unforgotten as they replay the camera. It is in deed a pleasure that what one misses greatly reoccur in front of him. One needs to look no further than Los Angeles riot in 1992. No matter how keen and responsible journalists are, nor could he be have the capability to record the scenario as convincing as cameras do.

Camera can not only take photograph clearly, but record numerous affairs immediately and objectively. When one has the appetite to memorize the affecting moment, the only thing he has to do is to function the camera and let it record automatically. The new tools are convenient so that they can function normally as one goes to any place if he wishes. Compared with written record, it is a bothering load when you want to take notes when you are moving. In addition, camera works mechanically without any personal feelings while written records is needless to say a subjective work. The objective record is precious for the purpose of doing research by the scientists and historians.

As for written record, it owns the inherent merits beyond comparison. Common sense tells us written records are mostly accomplished after the actual affairs happen. Thus recorders have plenty of time to deepen their thoughts and add their sharp opinions which can direct common people how to look into the special affair and illustrate the far-reaching meanings involving in the affairs. Because the delicate feelings cannot be presented by camera, writing is a viable alternative to solve the problem. Vast majority of litterateurs rely on writing to provide great works with deep historical significance to the public. Take the Hamlet by Shakespeare and The Old Man and Sea by Hamingwein for examples. The actual historical backgrounds together with vivid descriptions by the author constitute the classic works.

Considering the calmness brought about by written records, we need books rather than video to grant us dispassionate consideration. As we know, video always stimulates our emotion but no reasoning.
