Argument 220. The following appeared in an article in a magazine for writers.
"A recent study showed that in describing a typical day's conversation, people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction. This result suggests that, compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Therefore, people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media."
研究表明人们每天谈话23来自电视，1个来自阅读小说。结果暗示比起电视产业，出版业会利润下降。所以要当作家的应该获取为电视写作的培训和经验而不是印刷媒体的

In this argument, the arguer has a conclusion that the profit of the print industry will decline by citing the study result of people's conversation and then assumes that the people who wants to be writer should acquire skills for TV industry rather than print media. This conclusion is not cogent for several reasons and the assumption is not convincing either.

At the beginning, this study is not cogent and based on no further facts. For one thing, people's daily conversations are only a small part of their readings and can not reflect all their attraction. The news that TV offers us may mostly have relationship with people's daily lives, while the fiction may not contain the up-dated news that people will have to refer everyday. People's conversation is not the discuss of the studding of literature but  in most cases the daily life, so they may talk less about the fiction. However, this does not mean that they read the fictions less, on the contrary, it can only show people's topic of a day. For another thing, the print industry can not be compared with TV industry on the analogy of fiction to TV. Fiction is only one kind of print work which contains newspaper, magazines and books as well. For the reference of daily news, the use of newspaper and magzines may not be less than the  use of TV. Imagine that, we nearly read newspaper every morning when we have breakfast but we hardly go to watch TV at the same time to get the same information. Because the time we want to read the news may not be the time  TV shows, the newspapers should have more contribution to daily life's conversation in contrast with TVs. Therefore, the study based on the reference of TV and fiction is not convincing.

Even if people spend more time in watching TV than reading print works, the conclusion that the profit of the print industry will be declined makes hasty.  Firstly, there are no facts and surveys that show people's dislike of the print works and neither the possibility of being changed by TV.  Since we don't know the detailed information of print industry's sales, we can not assume whether the profit of it may rise or not. Secondly, people watch TV programs every day without need to pay for each time , in contrast, if you want to read a book or even a news from a newspaper you should pay for each time's reading. Considering this cost, the print industry may not earn less than the TV industry's. So the print industry's declining of profit bears no evidence.

Even if the print industry is not competed with TV industry, the people who want to be writers should not change their original willingness. Because the fictions and other kind of literature works are the resource of some TV programs, the writer's future may be better than before. As the fast progressing  of TV industry, the need for fiction and other kind of works may become more and more , so the salaries of the writers who devote themselves to the creation of  the works may not be easily decreased by the TV programs but even can be increased by this. What’s more important, people's will of choosing a career should not be fully considering the salary but also the interests and talent in a certain area. The training and experience may be helpful for one's further work but this is a way that need  fast changing their ideas in their minds to considering more for the TV's receiving rate, which may not be the original wish of people.

To sum up, people’s wish to have careers as writers should coherent with their likes. Even they need to acquire the essential training for further development , they should not make the decision on the base of the article's analysis because of the insufficient of the facts and the not cogent reasons.

我觉得Ａ不是特别好，因为不一定是学者才有说服力啊，而且谈得少就是看得少，你说不等于大家不去看似乎太牵强．
