Issue36 Mars
36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
1. The greatness of individuals cannot be appreciated by their contemporaries (in large part这算什么用法啊) is due to their outstanding talent and their transcendental intelligence which surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers. Besides, to test the validity of theories, works and ideas of the great individuals need a long time even centuries.
2. An individual's contemporaries may be emotionally connected with him or her.
3. Admittedly, there are still plenty of cases in which people's greatness were instantaneously recognized and judged objectively by their contemporaries.
I agree with the speaker that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
The greatness of individuals cannot be appreciated by their contemporaries( in large part ? )is due to their outstanding talent and their transcendental intelligence which surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers. Not only (in the science sphere 用area或别的表示领域的次比较好吧)are there new inventions and discoveries which are not accepted, even repelled, by the public at the initial time, but there are also many brilliant art works in the art field that are adulated by people many years later.(这句用了否定词在句首后面部分倒装的结构,值得学习,而且句子的复杂程度也可以,但是对语句的驾御能力一般,尚有相当的提高空间) Here I just pick up two persuasive instances to illustrate my viewpoint. Copernicus Nicholas,a great Polish astronomer, put forward the heliocentric theory in the early sixteen's century. Though he had spent all his life to spread his belief, yet it was really popularized in the common people three hundred years later. Van Gogh, a talented painter, left us fruitful eminent works, but he only sold out one piece when he was alive. What is more, to test the validity of theories, works and ideas of the great individuals need a long time even centuries. (Some theories may initially be thought to be reasonable but may be overthrew by the later ones. (Only the theories, works and ideas that can stand with the test of time are truly great ones.
On the other hand, an individual's contemporaries often cannot assess his or her greatness objectively in that they may be emotionally connected with him or her. They lived in the similar social surroundings and experienced the important social events, or turbulent(---有这种标点符号的用法吗?)too much emotional connection may lead to overevaluation to the great individual's contribution. To the extreme condition, overevaluation may change into personal adoration and the whole society will be under the control of this one "great person". only the later people, perspectiving the great individuals through a broad picture of history, can they make comparatively objective evaluation.(讲的是盲目崇拜的问题吧,这个例子或许只有中国人看得懂,ets不知会不会有一种不知可否的感觉。)
Admittedly, there are still plenty of cases in which people’s greatness were instantaneously recognized and judged objectively by their contemporaries. This condition often occurs in the scientific sphere where the new inventions or discoveries can immediately bring productive power. Many modern inventions such as the train and telephone, exceedingly pulling the development of the society, are quickly acknowledged by the public.
To sum up, an individual's greatness cannot be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries; the most objective evaluators of a person's greatness are people who belong to a later time.(423 words)
1.topics
