TOPIC:ISSUE 214 - "Society should identify those children who have special talents and abilities and begin training them at an early age so that they can eventually excel in their areas of ability. Otherwise, these talents are likely to remain undeveloped."

Should society identify those children who have special talents and abilities and begin training them at a early age? I agree with this contention. However, we still have more to pay attention to.
Admittedly, some children have special talents and abilities in some fields. If we can train them early, they will have more chance to succeed in the fields than others. Yet not only should we train them, but we should also stimulate their interests in the specific fields. After all, only talent is not enough. If they want to eventually excel in the fields, they also need pains and patience. Without being interested in their areas of ability, they may easily give up, when they encounter some setbacks. For example, when I was in the primary school, a classmate of mine showed great talent in mathematics. However, because both of his parents were poets, he was very interested in writing poems. Hence, although he was very good at mathematics, he always tried to write poems, rather than studying mathematics. Because of his outstanding talent in the mathematics, the headmaster of my school deliberately arranged the best teacher in mathematics in my school to train him. Yet, because he was not interested in mathematics, so he eventually abandoned mathematics. Therefore, besides talents and abilities, interest is also very important.
However, there are some people who appear not to have talents and abilities when they are very young in any specific field, yet when they grow up, they show great talents and abilities in some fields. For example, Einstein, the greatest physicist in the twentieth century, was regarded as a foolish student when he was very young because he was always not able to answer the teacher's question and often asked his teacher some unusual questions. But when he was twenty years old, he showed his great ability in the field of physics and eventually created the theory of relativity. So, we should not drop those children who do not show talents and abilities in some specific fields and provide them equal opportunities.
At last, in modern society, we need more and more generalists, who are expert in the knowledge of more than one field Those who are too special in one area may lose connection with other fields and without assimilating resources from other areas, their talents will eventually run out. Newton, as an illustration, is not only a great physicist, but also a mathematician. He said that he got support form mathematics, while he got inspiration from physics. So, in order to make the children well prepared for the society, we should give them opportunities to get familiar with more areas, rather than only training them in only one specific area where they have talents and abilities in, when they are still very young.
In sum, I concede that we should provide the children who have special talents and abilities with early training. Yet we should also take into account some other factors in order to make the children well prepared for their future.
