47"Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."

I strongly agree with assertion that our contemporary society needs emphasis on reasoning and other cognitive skills much more. The world around us presents a series of reasonless activities which do harm to well-balanced development of our society. Two examples that aptly illustrate this point involve the fields of economics and science.
In the business realm, consumers generally pay little attention on the intellect during shopping. Consider a not egregious example, due to the city's rapid development and prosperity, dealers find all sorts of means to sale surplus commodities. For instance, rebating is an efficient tactic in competition with the peers and catering for consumer's interests in purchasing. Attracted by the price of the commodities in rebate which is seemly lower than it is ever before, people would buy a good deal of needless goods. However, what shocks us most is the price of commodities at a discount is far higher than the gross price before. In fact, it is only a trick of the trade. There can be no doubt that phenomenon of shopping blandness owning to lack of intellect in evaluating the prince and demand of goods. Besides, a group of people are fond of name brand products but the general ones which are not only as good as the former but also have a reasonable level of price. Accordingly, our modern society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect, especially on reasoning and other cognitive skills by trade.
In the scientific realm, intellect is strongly desired. Do the scientists place enough emphasis on the intellect? No. On the one hand, numerous scientists over the world are engaged in research in a narrow field which is hot and easy to get prize and honour. Vicious competition, which aims to publish paper, is no benefit individually and scientifically. On the other hand, many researchers and students are prone to trust in the key professor's assertion, even a obviously wrong one. For supporting examples one need look no further than N ray event. Blondlot, a distinguished professor of physics in France, claimed that a new ray has been observed and named it N ray. This assertion is so exciting in physics after discovered X ray that more than a hundred papers published in one year about this new ray. Nevertheless, a British physicist, Wood doubted that the strange ray can't be seen in other laboratories except Blondlot's. Through precise reasoning and rigorous experiments, Wood overthrew the fashionable assertion. Thereby, the end result is that we do not place enough rational thoughts and cognitive skills in science.
Admittedly, we should emphasis the importance of intellect. In some aspects, however, emphasizing intellect excessively and de-emphasizing emotions can carry negative consequences for our society. Positive emotions can stimulate imagination and creativity, and promote growth of our society. Negative emotions will make people avoid the bad news.
In sum, we should pay more attention to reasoning and cognitive skills. Emphasizing on the intellect and emotion properly leads to a healthy society. Accordingly, on balance the speaker is fundamentally correct.
