TOPIC:ISSUE 17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

When people talk about laws, someone just divides laws into two types: just and unjust. And some people just disobey and resist the laws which are unjust in their minds. But in my opinion, the laws cannot be simply judged as just or not, and people should never express their discontent of the laws by disobeying or resisting them.
First of all, the laws are so complicated that them cannot be divided simply as just or unjust. The aim of every law in the contemporary is to maintain the stability and the harmony of the society. And thereby, the lawmakers have to consider about all the people in the society, who are in different social levels and have different religions. The laws are in some sense just a compromise between interests of different group of people. So to a particular group, the laws may be unjust in some fields, which limit their rights or deprive their benefits. But in a wider scope, the laws are just because they give all people similar rights in the society, as well as offering them a harmonic environment. For instance, laws limit the right of business men to earn more money by monopoly, but at the same time, the laws give the consumers the right to choose the products.
Moreover, as our society is changing in a unbelievable speed, there are a lot of new things exist in the world everyday. To catch the pace of the society, the laws themselves are changing. And we are not sure that if a law that is considered to be just today will still act justly in the future. At the same time, some laws that have been established for a long period of time in the human society may become unjust in the contemporary. One example is that homosex is now being accepted by many nations and people with same gender now can get married "legally". But just tens of years ago, no one thought our laws are unjust because they don't accept homosex, including the homosexuals themselves. So, as times changed, people's opinions are changing, and whether a particular law is just is also changing. Individuals should not only judge the laws by their own views and their own times.
We must admitted, unfortunately, that there are still some laws which are unjust to most of the people in the society. But our laws are amending themselves when democracy is making more and more effects. And what people should do when them are facing an unjust law is not to disobey and resist them, which can only break the order of the nation and harm the progress of democracy. The proper way for them is to let the authorities know what people are thinking about and what is the thing their citizens really want. In a democratic society, the authorities would amend the laws when they are no longer suitable for the requirement of the new times.
To sum up, laws cannot be simply judged as just or unjust. Furthermore, in a democratic society, people should not disobey or resist any laws even they think them unjust. What people should do is to change the laws to be just legally. |
