History, defined as the branch of knowledge to record all the events in the past, is always linked with “old things”. It is not surprising that some fashion once modish is less likely to be shown on ads, billboards, or magazines and it is true that the memory of some giant once having impressed the whole world by his charisma is gradually fading. However, we have to admit that history is exerting its influence directly or indirectly on our human being’s daily life. From this point of view, history could be a valuable study to provide important reference for today.

The fact could not be denied that history enjoys a tight relationship with our modern society, in politics, laws, common people’s lives etc. The research of update political situation always traces to the complicated diplomatic events and warfare of the Second World War, or even earlier. In Britain, the sentence of a crime, from a murderer to a robber, has to take a reference of the similar conviction in the past. Also it is not unexpected that the fashionable style of some dynasty nearly one thousand years ago would be the main topic of this autumn on the stage of Milan. Today is the extension of history and in certain fields history is the important ruler for today.

However, some history study, seemed unconcerned with today’s life, unveils some substantial and underlying correlation, which is frequently ignored. For example, the research on the totem is the right case. Even though the totems, which belong to the tiny tribes on the plain of Africa, are so far from us that it is not worth remembering, they are likely to be the important evidences to reflect the full image of the temporal life locally, provide decent reference of religion in Africa and even dedicate to the “culture identification” for the Black People in the US nowadays. From this point of view, some history events do not exist in our eyeshot superficially, nevertheless, we could not deny that they are not playing certain important roles in our daily life in their particular manner.

As I am trying to uncover the mystery of history, series of questions are raised: what is history on the earth? Is it the omnipotent power to control the real world? Or is it the incantation made by God to predict the future? Is there anything after that? The answer is that it is so, as history is the honest reflection of human being’s nature. Maybe historical events is less likely to be duplicated, but it is the human nature, no matter of kindness, evil, prejudice, greedy or brave, that could be found in the various events. We are impressive of the black people’s dream to pursue freedom and equality from King Martin Luther to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. We learn of the evitable consequence of the madcap tyrant from Hitler to Saddam Hussein. History is a mirror that betrays all the characteristics of human beings.

In conclusion, it is the spirit of history to make human beings learn themselves clearly from seemingly irrelevant events. In this sense it is always valuable and related with our daily life, no matter it is regarded as the serious study for those experts or as the recreation topic on the lunch table.
