During the human history, the art has left the society many valuable things. Undoubtedly, it is the artist who makes these worth. If the value wants lasting, however, the critic must be involved.

Art, the product of creative human activity in which materials are shaped or selected to convey an idea, emotion, or visually interesting form. So it is a complex and exquisite course for the artist to making a work with real value; that is, the real life of art is without question endowed by the artist rather than other kinds of persons. Take Da Vinci as an example. The Mona Lisa, Leonardo's most famous work, is as well known for its mastery of technical innovations as for the mysteriousness of its legendary smiling subject. And we can never find a second “Mona Lisa Smile” in the world. Therefore, the value of a work of art can be only generated by a certain artist.

With the time going by, more and more ancient art works could not be easily understood by contemporary people. So the art critics appeared. They are always with abundant knowledge about both art and history so that they can analyze the art works’ structures, meanings, and problem, compare them with other works, and evaluate them. Therefore, it is the art critic who makes the value of art unveiled. It is said that prior to the 19th century, the painting was not treated with anything like the iconic reverence it receives today. What made it popular is the criticism giving by the famous French critic Theophile Gautier, who first veiled the Mona Lisa’s smile with mystery. Since then, this painting has been placed great emphasis.

The critic is also who can give the art permanent vitality. One of the reasons why the ancient inheritance can be succeeded is there are certain people studying certain aspects in certain areas. So does art. The artist is with responsibility with the passing on of the methods, while the art critic is responsible for the spread of art’s significance to ordinary persons. Therefore, the value of certain art work is actually lasted by the critics rather than the artist. The relationship between the art and the critic just like that between the swift horse and the person who appreciate it: only when the horse is recognized by the Bo Le (a character in the Chinese allegory) does it exert it’s strong suit of running. Therefore, without the art critic has been playing vital role in the art history.

In conclusion, whenever we appreciate an artist about his or her excellent work, we should also remember the contribution of the critic on the transmitting of the art values.
