Do critics have some positive influence on artists' creativity? Should artists pay certain attention to the judgment of their critics? In my opinion, criticism plays a significant role in the development of an artist, though they may underestimate several great works temporarily sometimes.

First of all, it is critics that can understand and interpret the work of artists most comprehensively. For example, when it comes to an abstract painting, a layman could only feel the direct feeling, while a critic may assess it in various aspects, such as painting skills, the combination of skills and content. Therefore, critics are much easier to find out the shortcoming of the painter than layman. Without the criticism from critics, an artist could expect much more appreciation from population, while much less improvement from one's contemporary level. A student with a major of art in school turns out to be an artist because one keeps on improving with the guide from one's tutor, a critic could be a extension of the tutor by pointing out one's flaws.

In the second place, critics could be an effective navigator to forestall the arts from deviation of correct direction. The Oscar Awards is a pretty vivid example. A director could make lots of money by directing Hollywood style movie -- giant scene, delicate animation, astonishing computer acrobat and so on, but he can not win the Oscar Award without the art essence indispensable in the critics' eyes. Most of directors are willing to send their movies to be judged by the critics and take it as the greatest honor to win the awards because they take the same opinion in the definition of art, the definition of beauty. That's why we can still expect a few really meaningful movies every year, in the market dominated by commercial film.

Nevertheless, artists should insist on their principles while accepting some useful suggestions from critics, rather than listen to them totally. History tells us time and time again that some great works could be neglected, even blamed by their contemporary critics. But they finally prove themselves to be invaluable. Since art could go beyond the society and the understanding of majority. If these artists give up their principles facing with the criticism from outside, how could we enjoy their profound heart now?

Without listening to some objective opinions from critics, A diamond could never erase its flaw; Without persisting to one’s own uniqueness, A diamond will turns out to be a normal pebble. Only by selectively taking suggestion from critics, could a general quality jewel finally polished    into a flawless gem!
