Hello Lu,
Applicants are admitted on a competitive basis. Two of the most important
factors are GPA and GRE. This year we had a lot of applicants with GRE
scores greater than 1350 and GPA in the 3.8 range. In addition to those
parameters, it is critical that we find a match for each applicants in
terms of faculty members. Each incoming students has to be accepted by one
of our pofessors, who commits to providing space, time and resources to
guide the student through their studies. Sometimes, even though
qualifications are very good, students have a hard time finding a
professor with the same research interests that still has available space
in their research group. I find that the students that do best in getting
admitted into graduate programs are those who contact professors by email
and introduce themselves, sometimes even come meet them before a decision
is made. That way, if their GRE and GPA scores are very good, they also
have a higher chance of being a accepted in the research group they are
interested in.
