TOPIC: ISSUE160 - "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
WORDS: 590 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-3-28
As we approach the new era, shifts from all walks of life overflow into our world and influence both our actions and our minds. Leaders, as the locomotive of all realms, also suffer obnoxious confusion and anxiety now and then. Should leaders continue holding out their principle and give up opinion of following the popular beliefs without hesitation? In this case, I still hold out my conviction tightly that leaders should and must abide by his underlying principle and objective consistently.
In political world, it is the indispensable quality of being committed to one's principles that stimulates the leader to step forward. Undoubtedly, a successful political leader should forever bear in mind that his resolute decision, his unwavering personality and, most importantly, the bold bravery to challenge the authority turns out to be the key that makes him stand out from the crowd. Actually no significant accomplishment can be achieved only by unscrupulously hearing, even blindly following the crowd without firm determinations and principle. Help for my opinion comes from Mao zedong, the principal founder of CCP and foremost leader of the People's Republic of China, who insisted on keeping abiding by the principle that the main force of China was peasants, which was severely contrary to the Marxism holding that the workers were virtually the great force in war. Obviously, without Mao's commitment to his substantiated principle and firm objective, perhaps Chinese people now still live in the cover of Japan, let alone escaping from the list of poverty –stricken countries.
In the realm of business, it is established that leader's commitment to his or her principle play an inimitable role in leadership. We have heard that some people may argue that the principal and underlying goal of business should and must be the pursuit of profitability. After all, no business company was ever born to be charities or some kind of nonprofit communities. However, such complaints, in fact, overlook something more invisible, something more substantial behind the superficial phenomenon. From my standpoint of view, the most effective way to win the popularity of society at large is to hold out your underlying principle firmly, regardless of what other competitors conduct outside. For instance, P&G, the brilliant manufacturer of household products in worldwide area, persistently holds out in mind the philosophy of "building from the within" and the principle "People are our most important asset" and eventually dominates market of manufacturing of household products. Wouldn't P&G remain popular in the business world if he had abandoned the underlying principle instead of unscrupulously following his competitors? Let the arguers answer this question.
In the pursuit of civil rights, our prominent leaders benefit a great deal from their consistent commitment to their final destination and firm principle. Among the illustrations of this truth which might be cited, the practice of Martin Luther King, Jr. will furnish a quintessential example. Devoting his whole life to the cause of civil rights movement, he complied with his determined principle and great objective to emancipate the black people around the world under fierce objections of white people. Finally his dedication turn out to be a reward: by acquiring rights for black Americans, he also convinced a large part of whites to advocate his causes and ultimately converted their traditionally dominant attitudes toward blacks which had uprooted in their minds.
In brief, leaders from all walks of life should and must remain to be committed to his underlying principle and firm objective. Only by doing these can they direct their subordinates, make his determinations and prompt his cause forward.
