'Context is: 如果你做了件比较好的事情,例如拿了A+,你老板对你说 good for you,什么意思啊?' that is the exact situation the poster excerpted for asking purpose, in other word, he was asking the question in case of doing good, and the mark of A plus is the very example for further explanation. For this reason, I directly submitted the answer that he requested more than the answers in all facets. Fact is that I did both but you didnt, say, you didnt offer an all-sided answer in need of saving your breath possibly, and you doubted about my answer at the very beginning, later on, distracting the attention to the syntactic ambiguity which was frowned upon by me on the specific case that the original poster referred to.Actually, I'd love to spare no effort to help all the askers on what they ask with no regard to your breath-related hypotheses.

do ya know what "For example" means???? it means it is just an example.... if he wanna refer to some EXACT situation he was in, then he wouldn't have used "For example". i guess it's pretty sure, he was asking for general..... and he does not have to take million "For example" to indicate he was asking from general.........
as you said, a word or phrase which is not case related, or specific situation related it is kinda meaningless......well......i guess that is what we pay for our dictionary...
coz under everyword.....it gives all the defition as possible with no referring to any specfic situation, as i contributed to this post, thou i have relative limitation.
i jsut wanna say a single fact can have lots meaning behind it.....and i give a try to the full........semantic and syntactic ambiguity are inseperate part of language.... why it's a distract to you, since we all still stick on it???  maybe my anwer was kinda crap relate to this topic, but ya sure very time you gota what you wanna by humping the dicitionary???? no.....sometime dictionary is kinda gay... thou most the time it is not.....
and from the very beginning......i made a quite plain big "?", why is "good for you"="good to hear" in any sense......i am still doby on it......
last thing last..... plzzzzzzzz don't get any general phrase to specifized.......
unlock yr box..... we all study in different subjects..... no one is possible to do kinda cross-sub....detail analysis.......or kinda case study......it won't give a
mind-blowing experience.......

i am pretty glad to see you keeping building up this post with me..... which hopefully does not make other ppl feel like n00bies.....

most importantly....... i always make general plain statement....not referring to any particular case or someone.......so no offence,......don't get pissed.......

no offence.......if i piss you off.......sorry then........

secondly............answer is "the action is good for you" or "the desirable outcome is good for you" or "the 'kinda good thing' is good for you"
am i right???? well......coz ppl in uni are supposed to think kinda critically....

well....i guess i missed out the sec question

contextualism......noun.(philosophy) a doctrine that emphasized the importantce of the context of inquiry in a particular question.......

Wow.....that is pretty big for me........ are you trying to say.....the phrase "good for you" is a SO UNIVERSAL IMPORTANT CONTEXT????? or you wanna make yourself look that big????? i guess this big word is kinda way off the topic.....and it's too beyond anyone here........ i pretty don't care if it is your chinese teacher or whatever told you, hopefully not....... or let's say a common ppl....... coz most UNIVERSAL IMPORTANT CONTEXT is way beyond most common ppl....... well...in one particular case, if you study PHSY honor......I WILL RIGHT SHUSH UP...... in any other case...let's just forget about it, okay?
cool with that???

fine
this weekend ,i have an important exam
so ,when i finish ,i will be back here
thank you
i have learned a lot from you
but
contextualism
i guess
it means .it is based on the presumption that one can derive meaning from or reduce meaning to observable contexts from a linguistic point of view
because you and another friend .mentioned  something about
semantics ,systactics and so on
so i think your must know this term contextualism
no offending
just tell the meaning of the term
though it is ,it doesnot mean your understanding of the term is not correct
just give us an explanation in another way
you know
in this world ,different people have different ideas even towards the same thing ,
just like this ,the same queston,we have different answers to this
any thank you
you speak english like a native speaker, using some words which i  donnot use it ususally as an english learner.such as .piss off ,shush up
anyway ,thanks again

Synonym to 'good for you' is 'good to hear'~

Please join the survey below then^^
https://bbs.gter.net/viewthre ... &extra=page%3D1

someone never made this statement??????? synonym: a word or phrase means exactly or nearly  the same to another word or phrase. don't tell me coz of this "nearly" that this SOMEONE could pull off the fact that HE did mean "good for you"= "good to hear". if this SOMEONE really didn't mean it......then HE should not have used "synonym"......look at it......... tell me who....i just need the creepy name (Q1)....nothing more........
i suppose you know what "for example" means....... why you so stick on this example so alone????? last time repeat myself.....do you or does anyone have to take BILLION "for example" to indicate it's referring to general???(Q2)
assume the author knew those 2 meaning.....and you were clarfying his confusion by eliminate one meaning. from what you said "he got confused that which one was meant for the case", i do assume you meant only one meaning out of those 2 is applied in this case. then my question is why "good for you" in case you got a "A" is only explained "well done" rather than "this A gonna give you good impression for job huntering, or earn you more reputation from your peers" is that possible???" that is why i assumed it's like "healthy food is good for you health" give me your percentage estimatee of the likelihood that my assumptino was possible(Q3)

saddly....we are only 100% sure about we don't know something, never other way round.....coz no one is 100% sure about what we know is 100% correct.....and this tiny possbile failure carry us forward........so honestly..... i didn't know what exacly what "contextualism" means...and i don't GUESS any specific term, since we can find a more reliable source...... i checked out 2 dictionaries..... they gave me the same definition as i posted previously......... GUESS is not a right attitude toward science...
well.....SEMANTIC SYNTAX.....morphemes...pragmatic are PSYC term.....which is kinda scientific term at least it's under SCI DEGREE, and it's based on STATISTIC METHOD, we usually deal with 95% CI or 99% CI.......so i won't link them to any PHSL term... coz i personally don't count PHSL as a science subject..........and PHSL is nothing i know about........ it's not a shame to admit what you don't know.......but it's kinda stupid to stick on and fight for what you actually know nothing about.....

i totally agree with you that different ppl has different thought on one partcular term.....that was why i trying so hard to list out all the possible to asnwer this post.
but obviously someone eliminated the some possiblility applied on that particular term.......which pops from other ppl's minds......

STATS 101
H0. a=b
Ha. a not equal b

we can only accept H0 (null hypothesis)or reject H0 otherwise we will make type 1 or 2 error, Ha is never testable (alternative hypothesis)...don't aske me why..maybe a PHD can answer that... i am not gonna do a T-test on it......coz the sampling is too time consuming, and purely insane......and i guess JOE847 already rejected it........which we had an agreement on...... SO now we all agree "good for you" is not equal to "good to hear". hey.....what is the problem now???? i kidna get lost.......we kidna way off the topic......lol............

1.i still can't see why it's the target since there are million targets up there........ you just picked the one you favored....... which doesn't mean the others not exist or can't be aimed at........

2.not saying zillion example for one situation, but from general....which means problly zillion situations..........

3. it's nothing about purely english or chinglish......... it's the sub-lying meaning........ why an american can't use his A to get impression for job huntering?
"good for you" coz "it gives you a greater chance to success in job huntering" is that a cultural boundried phrase?? when we say "stunning" "awesome" "brilliant" we don't  add "this is" at the beginning...coz it's boooooooooooring......and it does make us look silly.......

lastly......happy goodfriday.......and easter............lol.....

WELL......if the QUESTION required a single term....i guess a single term answer will do, otherwise no mark will be given...... like "what is the capital of China now".."peking" is the answer....... anything not including "peking", no matter how sophisticated it looks will earn us no mark........ the definition was from colin dicitonary....i didn't make it up......

1.jeeze..i got the point! its easy to disabuse ur puzzle why there is a load of targets in ur sight, cuz u strongly hold that a all-sided explanation applies universally which makes u aim at all the targets in the archery range rather than yours only, but no point would be awarded in the least!! actually, the situation cited by the asker that i focus isnt due to my emotional preference, but for the reasons pertainin to the context in conjunction to his query that i die hard figured out...and....offered him a dead on answer, viz. what does that mean in that case~~~ straight up right from the start~~~

2.there is no need to quote many a example to clarify one situation that was stuck on by the asker.

3.an american definitely could submit his marksheet with good honor to make it advantageous, and the assessor would probably bring out a single piece of 'good4u' to indicate his pleasure to hear of, instead of acting like a pricking caregiver~
here comes a story....weeks ago.. i was watching the American Idol with my american br on the couch, he couldnt wait to throw out his remarks when Ace, a contestant, was staring down Simon, the judge, who said he belonged in the bottom 3.''GOOD FOR YOU Ace, show him u wont yake his crap!!''blurted out by my bro~~ and the 'good4u' means 'good job' he told me today in reply.  yippeee...its clear enough that my assumption has a leg to stand on~~
also an example for applying good4u in a whole sentence...
*********************
A:do u want a bottle of milk???
B:no thanx.
A:why not??its(this is/ that is)good for you!!!
*********************
the meaning of 'good4u' is no more than conducive added with demonstrative pronoun in the front in this instance. with the words like stunning, awesome.....whatever u mentioned, its cool to combine the words with demonstrative pronouns if u will, such as Gosh!!!thats A...W...F..U...L....

4.i didnt konw what were u talkin about in ur post right above...
anyway, thanx for ur greetings ^^

well....firstly.....aimed all and got all....is not dull......but aimed one and missed that is gay......my initial statement right point on your "good4u=good2hear" whiched has been rejected by yourself.....not so sure whether ya reject yr statement or the fact you stated it........ the case is "he always hear that phrase...." i guess you confused that case with "someone always got A, and get tips from boss"........ since he always hear that..... then it should be an universal target.......so for your 2.....there is lots situations up there.....
in yr 3....you listed a particular case too.....nice shot since ya got an american buddie rather than an Iraq friend which gain ya more credit on convicing.......but did he tell you that is a under-lying meaning rather than semantic meaning???

my example is

A: you think ya okay with this job?
B: yeah, i proved myself with bunch A
A: good for U, wait for my call

here it means those bunch A gives your more credit to win this job.....why not add "it's"......coz no one wanna be that gay.......

4........since i listed out my 1,2,3question and you answer with order 1,2,3......my first question is only going for a name....which you answered with bunch.....*#%
that's why i gave an example...... guess ya not that good in understanding how an example works.....

这个帖子我一直在关注着,感谢poorbelle,丧心和joe824的讨论,让我学了不少东西.老实说,我尝试着用了几次,呵呵,虽然每次都感觉底气不足,下面的一个例子是真实的例子:
我和我TA班上的学生,
我:how's your first assignment?
he: oh, it's good, 98, i think
我:good for you~~(我特意拖长了you)
he: yes, thanks
我不知道他是怎么理解的,anyway,我用了.....汗ing :p

just forget all the former discussions and keep eyes on the phrase whenever it turns up in the daily life and english speakin films...and i finally suffice it to tell that americnas tend to use a single term of good 4 u indicating 'good job' in case of the situation u mentioned.  A sentence of 'its good 4 u ' or 'that would be good 4 u ' unveils a direct meaning of conducive and is widely used in the circle of english speakin people....

emm..thats my point though..u may well dig out the 100% accurate answer if u keep focuzin the phrase in whatever occasions..and it does appear in every hole and corner!
