School Board Approves Contract After Brief Teacher Strike


District Has 1,100 Students At Four Schools



ROGUE RIVER, Ore. -- The Rogue River school board has unanimously approved a two-year contract that was reached with 61 teachers at four schools after a brief strike.
The contract provides for a 1 percent increase in each of two years, retroactive for about 10 months. Some teachers will get step increases based on years of service and advanced training.
      
Teachers walked out April 12, but the strike soon ended after a tentative agreement was reached.

There are more than 1,100 students among the four schools.

NATURE IN SHORT / Nature meets the city in the wilds of Todoroki Ravine
When I invite my friends to go for a walk through the Todoroki Ravine, they usually conjure up images of a long day spent clambering over slippery rocks high up in the mountains.

The Todoroki Ravine, however, is located in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. Called Todoroki Keikoku in Japanese, this "ravine" is really only about 20 meters deep and a little more than a kilometer long. Still, it's an incredible chunk of natural landscape for such an urban setting.




On the opposite side of the ravine stands Mitakeyama Kofun, a scallop-shaped mound about 42 meters in diameter and seven meters high, thought to have been built in the early-to-mid fifth century. Inside the burial chamber was found an unusual bronze mirror, with seven little bells attached around the edge. Today the mound is completely forested over, but a path leads up to the top, where stands a small shrine dedicated to fabulous Zao-Gongen--the wild spirit of Yoshino Mountains in Nara Prefecture and the patron saint of Shugendo, Japan's unique brand of mountain asceticism.
