TOPIC: ARGUMENT24: the following appeared in a memo from the president of Viva-Tech, a manufacturer of high-tech medical equipment.
"In order to reduce costs, we should close some of our existing small assembly plants and build a large central plant. Grandview would be an ideal location for this new plant. First, of the locations that we have considered, Grandview has the largest adult population, so that we will be able to staff our plant quickly and easily. Second, since the average wage earned by workers in Grandview is less than that in the other locations, we should be able to keep production costs low. Last, as an inducement for us to build there, Grandview's town council has offered to allow us to operate for the first three years without paying city taxes.”

In this argument, the president of the Viva-Tech states that the company should build a new large central plant to reduce costs. Then the president states that Grandview would be an ideal location for this new plant. In order to proof his opinion, the president said 3 reasons, first, of the locations that we have considered, Grandview has the largest adult population, so that we will be able to staff our plant quickly and easily; second, since the average wage earned by workers in Grandview is less than that in the other locations, we should be able to keep production costs low; third, as an inducement for us to build there, Grandview's town council has offered to allow us to operate for the first three years without paying city taxes. In this theory, the president’s idea sounds good, but a closer examination reveals that his or her conclusions are based on nothing more than guesswork, not hard facts.
There is not really any argument here, the president merely states conclusions with no basis in fact. First of all, the president states that building a new large central plant can help the company to save the money, but in this argument the president said nothing about the large central plant. In fact, we have got small assembly plants, and building the large central plant will cost our money. So, without enough evidence to be given, the president’s conclusion that building large central plant to reduce costs would be likely based on wishful thinking rather than fact.
Secondly, the president refers to Grandview that the ideal location for this new plant to be built. Then, he gave us 3 reasons to proof his opinion. However, the evidence which the president given can not be believed by us. For first reason, the president claim that Grandview has the largest adult population, so that we will be able to staff our plant quickly and easily. But there were no information about the population in Grandview given. It is impossible that the most civilian of the Grandview are old, and little employee can be employed. In the second place, the president said that the average wage earned by workers in Grandview is less than that in the other locations, so we can keep production costs low. It sounds good, but it is impossible that the worker in Grandview are not suitable for the work, or the worker in Grandview will pay more money than in the other place. So we can not accept the view of the president’s saying. At last, the president states that Grandview's town council has offered to allow us to operate for the first three years without paying city taxes. Indeed, the large central plant can not be lived there only three years, the city taxes may be very high after three years. Furthermore, other cities may give the same policy for the company. So, this is another critical in the argument.
Last but not least, production costs include many things, such as the transportation costs, city taxes and the costs of the processed materials. Without the enough information to be given, the president’s saying can not be accepted.
To summarize, there is no evidence presented by the president that the plan will lead to the specified conclusion. As the matter of fact, this argument is based on mere assumptions, so it is likely that the arguer has it all wrong. Without further factual evidence that the plan will perform as advertised, the presidents appears to be engaging in wishful thinking rather than rational planning. |
